Super User jimmyjoe Posted June 15, 2021 Super User Posted June 15, 2021 Here is the handle on my 7'-02" H/M Mojo Bass Glass rod. Here is the handle I would like it to be. This is the Daiwa Steez SVF AGS. My reason is simple: I have arthritis, and the "hump" helps align my thumb with the higher thumb bar on 300-size reels. Is there any simple way to add this hump to the Mojo Glass handle, to build it up? Layers of thin cork glued together, maybe? Maybe something other than cork? Any ideas will be welcome! And again ....... Thnx. jj Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 The reel seat on the mojo won’t match up to a thicker grip. You could slice up an Eva grip to try and re-engineer the seat/grip interface. Or better yet lay up layers of Winn grip tape then wrap over the whole thing. 1 1 Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 16, 2021 Super User Posted June 16, 2021 I've cut shims out of various materials to try to make the rod handle fit my hand better - with mixed results. Easiest & best results have came by using rod wraps or tennis racquet replacement wraps, just trying to layer them up til the rod felt better. I've tried various brands, haven't tried the Winn Grip tape yet. I have tried baseball bat tape, which comes in a variety of thicknesses. For me the thinnest one worked the best. Baseball bat tape is more expensive than tennis racquet tape. This will cost you a little bit of rod sensitivity - at least it seemed to me that it did. NOT A LOT - just a little bit and you get used to it. Something I've tried a couple of times is to get a piece of balsa wood and use my Dremel to shape it into the side that I want. Then I hot glued the wooden piece to the rod handle. The only reason I did this was to get it to stay in place long enough for me to wrap over it. Again, this kinda worked, but every time I got it almost right, but not perfect, I'd have to cut off the rod wrap, sacrifice it to re-work the balsa shim. Before I knew it I had $50 invested in re-working a rod handle. I'd put this chore in the category of a "good winter project". 1 Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 I suspect you have a 15 degree offset grip set involved here it's nothing new Wiebe had one back in the 80's the design was later continued by Super Sticker who went out of business 10 years ago. G Loomis used them on their highend rods till they ran out, Gary Loomis had a pattern and last I knew had a US company making them for the Edge rods. Looking at a bare reel seat the hole was centered at the front threaded area and offset by about 3/8 of an inch down, the hole is not far from the trigger. The rear grip is cut at an angle matching the reel seat and the hole is offset to the bottom and centered at the butt cap. Anyway the offset give the bump on that seat, it was developed to improve palming on round reels, and continued doing an even better job on low profile reels we use now. My early I believe 1994 GLX rods and IMX rods came with them, I can supply a photo if necessary, of you could just look at the black widow reel seat on an Edge rod. The only disadvantage I've noticed is you can't use them on a larger diameter blank or you'll cut the trigger off, 9/16 max blank diameter if I remember right. 1 Quote

I haven't measured, but I'm sure that the fiberglass butt is larger than 9/16". ? jj Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted June 16, 2021 Posted June 16, 2021 IHopefully you can still find one and the blank is smaller than you think at the back of the reel seat. Them using a non exposed style seat makes me believe a 17mm exposed blank seat wasn't big enough. The Seeker and Lamiglas S glass I have used had this problem, I had to build my own exposed blank seats ala Rich Forhan style, but I have no idea how you could offset it, offsetting the arbors wouldn't do much. 1 Quote
