CHEVYRIDAZ Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 Hey all! I am wanting to install a radio and 2 speakers in my Astro bass boat. There are 2 holes behind the bench seat(one on each side of boat) with plastic caps. These look like a good spot for speakers because they are already there. But the holes lead directly into the hull so i am concerned about moisture and sound quality. Will the speakers sound good in that spot, will the moisture damage them? What are those holes suppose to be for? My brothers Stratos has them as well as some other boats i have seen. Quote
simplejoe Posted December 27, 2009 Posted December 27, 2009 I don't know what those holes are for. If you buy marine speakers you won't have a problem with moisture. On my last boat I installed MB Quart marine speakers and they sounded great and handled the weather real well, they even held up in a few rainstorms. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted December 27, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted December 27, 2009 I believe those holes are for venting the hull - to prevent explosive gas vapors from accumulating. So you probably don't want to block those. Marine speakers are the only way to go. The head unit can be anything you want if you use a weatherproof "lid". You can get those from Cabelas or BPS. Quote

But they are covered from the factory? They have a cover and 4 screws on them. I added a picture with the bench seat removed to show exactly what i mean. My bros boat has them in an oval shape that looks perfect for a 6x9" speaker. Mine are round and smaller though. Quote
Super User cart7t Posted December 28, 2009 Super User Posted December 28, 2009 Look like access points. Those would be fine for speakers. Quote
topwater.va Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 Marine grade speaker are the only way to go. I think that www.crutchfield.com has some good speaker and deals. Good people to do business with. I think they also make marine head units too. Quote
jamarkwe Posted December 29, 2009 Posted December 29, 2009 I would put speakers in the holes, but only if you can run and hide the speaker wires to them by any means.. Clarion makes some great marine radios with stainless steel cages...( I have installed a few) Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted December 30, 2009 BassResource.com Administrator Posted December 30, 2009 Ok, I understand now. I thought instead of covers, there were vents. Yes, the speakers could go there. Quote
