The Maestro Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 This past weekend I decided to give squarebill crankbaits a serious try and was pretty blown away at the number of fish I caught. Must've been 50-60 fish, mostly smallmouth. I was chucking a small Xcalibur in Rayburn Red, fishing mostly up tight to the bank. Don't know if this was typical but I can tell you it won't be my last time throwing them. Also what are you're go to squarebills and what do you guys like chucking them on? Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 15, 2021 Global Moderator Posted June 15, 2021 I don’t use them much, but when I do I only throw RC’s on 12# Sniper. Mike 2 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted June 15, 2021 Super User Posted June 15, 2021 Ditto ^^ Original RC's (1.5/2.5/3.5) on 12-15# line (fluoro mostly). ...but not my overall "go-to" numbers bait. That would be Ned or wacky. 2 Quote
gunsinger Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 I've never had any luck on a squarebill. Maybe I'm throwing the wrong ones or working them the wrong way. I wonder if @Glenn has ever done a video on selecting and working a squarebill. That's one I'd sure watch. 3 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted June 15, 2021 Super User Posted June 15, 2021 Where I fish crankbaits are only situational, as there is vegetation almost everywhere. But I have a bunch of Strike King and Lucky Craft 1.5s and 2.5s ready to go in case the right opportunity presents itself -- mostly craw (brown or orange), and sunfish/bluegill/perch patterns. If I wanted nothing but numbers, I'd put on a weightless t-rigged 4" senko 1 Quote
Happybeerbuzz Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 H2O in American Shad on a M BPS 7' Crank n' Stick with a Fuego CT 6.x and 12# Big Game. It will remain my go to square bill until I lose it because I cannot buy a back up here in California. 1 Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted June 15, 2021 Super User Posted June 15, 2021 Not sure I have one. Depending on conditions, Rage Menace, Arsenal Assault Bug, Spinnerbait, Bandit 100, Yum Crawbug, Ned Rig, and a Tube. All have had their days where they catch fish like crazy and days when they get ignored. The 2 most consistent though probably are the Yum Crawbug and Bandit 100 over the years. 2 Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted June 15, 2021 Super User Posted June 15, 2021 SPRO,Little John in Cell Mate is the most productive square bill I have ever thrown. But the square bill bite is fickle. Biggest numbers bait? Senko followed close by a Ned. 2 Quote

Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 15, 2021 Global Moderator Posted June 15, 2021 I thought OP was only asking about sq bills. I don’t necessarily fish just for numbers but my overall best bait is a Magnum Speed Worm by far. Mike Quote
Super User king fisher Posted June 15, 2021 Super User Posted June 15, 2021 If the bass are in 5 feet of water or less, I will try a square bill. If they are suspended in tree tops, I will throw square bills. I have many brands I use, my favorites are H2O and 6th sense. 6th sense cloud nine mini mag. is my go to this year, for both numbers as well as these big ones. 3 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted June 15, 2021 Super User Posted June 15, 2021 A Mann's baby one minus worked slow over and around vegetation. If the dinks won't hit that I throw a 2" Rapala floating minnow at them. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted June 15, 2021 Super User Posted June 15, 2021 The two squarebills I fish most are discontinued so there is no use in mentioning them any more . Quote
Peddiesake Posted June 15, 2021 Posted June 15, 2021 Where numbers- hands down a weightless stick bait. Quote

Tom Original Bagley's are still my favorite square bills for working through tree branches. The high buoyancy helps me to finesse the bait through the snags. Unfortunately where I fish there are also nets in the trees. Impossible to work a bait through without hanging on the nets from time to time. I was forced to find less expensive plastic square bills to use where I fish now. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted June 16, 2021 Super User Posted June 16, 2021 Megabass S Crank 1.5 in GP Sexy Shad is my #1 producing Squarebill with exactly 6 fish on it. I throw it on a Zodias 6'10" Med Mod with Curado 70 Mgl spooled with 12 lb FC. If a spot calls for a Squarebill I can catch those same fish on a fluke, spinnerbait, or chatterbait. I own atleast a 100 SB's and it's just hasn't clicked for me. But my Monkey's happy. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 16, 2021 Global Moderator Posted June 16, 2021 Ned rig or wacky rig for numbers most of the time. When the bite is really going on it though, I can put more fish in the boat with a jerkbait than anything else. They just seem to catch any fish and fish of all sizes and it can be almost every cast when conditions are right. 1 Quote
