I'm interested in buying a Daiwa Certate 2500 direct from Japan and wonder what that means down the line.

I assume it means Daiwa US service center won't honor a warranty since I didn't buy through them, but will they even accept for repair a reel I bought direct? If not, will the seller in Japan handle warranties and would the shipping costs be worth it over a North American repair shop? (I've read in posts that needing warranty work is very rare.) Otherwise, is there a consensus regarding where to send them for service, which I will definitely need?

I would imagine most of the paperwork (parts diagram, user manual, etc.) accompanying the reel would will be in Japanese. Where can I obtain paperwork written in English?

Off the topic of paperwork, I'm in a quandary regarding whether to buy the current 2019 Certate since apparently the 2021 version has been introduced. I'd appreciate advice on that, too.

Thanks.

You're on your own w/ JDM. Some of the manuals have English, but you're only referencing pictures. Part numbers are different for USDM/JDM, but you can usually find the same part and order from Daiwa USA. Last time I talked to them, Toby at Daiwa was pretty helpful.

I have heard only one bad experience, and Asian Portal is making it right.

A friend recently ordered a Daiwa Alphas Air at a great price.

Oddly, Daiwa Q/C let the frame by without a pressed-in hard anodized spool guard on one side of the frame.

It allowed his first backlash to wrap the spindle behind the spool flange.

AP sent him a Fed-Ex return ticket pdf and gave him a full refund.

Of course now he's on his own to find stock and another deal that good.

Certate - As far as I can tell, '19 Certate is LT version, and '21 Certate is SW version begins, at offshore 10000 size.

The LT will be lighter weight, functional size, and shallow spool, for braid.

The cost difference is double.

If they are coming out with a '21 Certate LT, you won't be able to get inside without special tools - I'm not sure about the '19 - I can't get past Shimano '18 Stella derivatives (see below).

I would be happy with the Mg-body '21 Luvias Airity.

Thanks, I appreciate the help. I actually did find a list of Certate 21 saltwater reels, but wasn't sure if the list was all-encompassing. I'll go ahead with the Certate 19, after I decide what ratios, etc., to choose.

I have bought nothing but JDM reels for years now, but I can't answer your questions because I've never run into a problem that required warrantied. If I did have a problem I would likely just fix it myself or send it to the shop. i wouldn't worry too much about really.

I had some trouble with credit card verification at Digitaka - something called "3D Secure" that my Apple Card wasn't registered for - so I canceled that order I bought a Daiwa 19 Certate LT2500S-XH from Asian Portal. It should arrive in the next week or so. Looking forward to it - the cheapest Daiwa spinning reel made in Japan (I think). This is aligned with my theory of buying the cheapest scotch with a cork.

Asian Portal will have the best price, but you bought a flagship reel

I received my LT2500S-XH and it is a thing of beauty. As described above, the user manual is in Japanese, with pictures. I can understand how not to rinse the reel, and how put line on the spool, not to oil the line roller. The other things are obscure.

For instance, it shows using a container with a tube on the bail bearings (?), but I'm not sure if that's lube or compressed air. Another pic (entitled "TB") shows twisted line on the reel and on the rod - seems pretty important, but I have no idea what the text means. Another is entitled "Long Cast - ABS" that shows line off of the front of the spool - no idea.

I would appreciate interpretations if you have any.

It's pretty much the same as any USDM spinning reel from Shimano.  You should be able to find one on the Shimano USA site.

A tip for dealing with JDM tackle | Another Spin on Glass | Fiberglass Flyrodders

The answer is in your phone.

Load up the Google Translate app. Start the app, pick the camera icon, and point the phone at the document. The app will produce a real time 'translation' of the text (see the image on the left). The translation won't be perfect (see the image on the right). Quite likely the translation will change as the phone moves. Still even the most puzzling text gives a better meaning than no translation at all. Using the scan option may give a more coherent translation. Aiming the phone at smaller sections of text gives better results also.

Replace Shimano with Daiwa.
