MiceNReets Posted June 13, 2021 Posted June 13, 2021 Hey everyone. So I recently snapped the tip on my st croix panfish series spinning rod recently. 6’ UL. Heck of a rod and unfortunate accident. So I contacted st croix and they agreed to replace it for a fee since it was out of warranty. Unfortunately they are out of stock of all their panfish series rods and trout series rods so they offered me an “upgrade” to the premier line up and are sending me a 6’ UL premier. I don’t know much about st croix and what’s what but is the premier that much of an upgrade over the panfish series rod and will it fish differently? I just found the panfish series rod to be perfect for how I fish UL. On the plus side. I trimmed the rod down to the closest guide so now it’s 5’6 and it works just as good except it’s more of an extra fast action over fast. LoL Quote
inferiorfisherman Posted June 14, 2021 Posted June 14, 2021 I have 3 of the regular panfish series, and my buddy has the legend elite panfish. I have not tried the premier. I do not think the legend elite is that much better than the regular panfish. The legend is a bit lighter, but not enough to justify the price difference. When fishing I could feel the bites just the same between the 2. Maybe if it was a bottom contact rod it would be worth the upgrade, but I don’t fish these rods on the bottom. I would go standard panfish. that being said I have recently been adding in the new dobyns trout/panfish rods. I prefer the dobyns most of the time over the panfish. They have a stiffer backbone with a light tip, and a more comfortable handle. They are faster action than the st croix for sure. I have the 6’2” UL, 7’ UL, and 7’4” light. I love them all for different techniques. I still use the 7’ st croix panfish as well, but I have basically retired the other 2 st croix panfish rods, and are used for boat guest or the neighborhood pond. I would choose the dobyns over the legend so I imagine I would feel the same about the premier. 1 Quote
desmobob Posted June 14, 2021 Posted June 14, 2021 I bought one of their Panfish Series UL spinning rods years ago. I liked it a lot and thought it was an excellent value. I immediately bought a second one. Please post your impressions of the Premier. Quote

The power is now higher ..... closer to a light power. The action is now slower. Action is a comparative descriptor, not a scientific baseline. The speed is faster. Manufacturers rarely discuss speed, but fishermen in the field notice it right away. This is where you notice the increase. Settling time will probably be better. jj 1 Quote

I feel like the premier isn’t an upgrade over the panfish series. ?. Should of just waited on the back order and go with what I know and like. Lesson learned. Oh well. 20 hours ago, desmobob said: I bought one of their Panfish Series UL spinning rods years ago. I liked it a lot and thought it was an excellent value. I immediately bought a second one. Super User jimmyjoe Posted June 14, 2021 Super User Posted June 14, 2021 Doesn't the Panfish series have stainless steel guides? I mean ..... like no inserts? The Premier has Kigan guides with ceramic inserts. That might explain some of the difference. jj 1 Quote

I handled both the panfish and the trout series rod. No question the premier is better and that’s why I went with it. Mines a 2 piece and is very very sensitive. To me It’s a fast action rod but has a softer tip than most fast action rods. Which, makes it great for floating worms down a creek. Where as my M/l premier is faster than most fast action M/l rods ( this one has become one of my favorite rods) I bought my premier for trout fishing with worms but, since my daughter is old enough to go on the boat we have been fishing a lot of blue gills. It works great for slip bobber fishing 2 Quote
desmobob Posted June 19, 2021 Posted June 19, 2021 I broke the top six inches off one of my two 6' UL Panfish Series spinning rods yesterday while putting it into the rod locker. ? I guess this might be an opportunity to order and try a Premier... 1 1 Quote

Take the hit and get what you want or it will haunt you for eternity.. or it will at the least bug you a bit. Quote

I already have a buddy that wants to buy the premier off me for what I paid. So I won’t be out of pocket. 1 Quote
