which one is best for skipping (overhangs, docks, rocks, shopping carts, etc.)?  I just got an SLX DC 150HG for skipping and casting weightless lures, went to try it out and practice my weightless skipping.  I was using zoom flukes, but was having a little trouble since they don't seem very dense, causing them to be a little troublesome to load the rod and they also seemed like they didn't have enough weight to continue the momentum...  the hook was a Gamakatsu Superline Screw Lock 4/0 (tried the 1/8th oz weighted version also but found the weight impeded the bounces).  I've seen TackleJunky81 skip a Strike King Caffeine Shad (it kind of looked like a magnum version but that may just my mistake) in his Curado DC skipping review, and it clearly had enough weight to get good skips (he also had a front weighted screw lock hook).  should I change/upsize the bait, get a different hook, or is there some technique (minus using a spinning rod) that I'm missing?

You made me curious so I went and weighed each.

Caffeine Shad:  7.628 grams

Super Fluke:  8.557 grams

It is still possible that the Caffeine Shad is more dense.  I do not have the tools to measure their volume.  However, they look close to the same size to me.  The Super Fluke does look slightly larger, but not much more than 12% larger.

These are the next soft jerkbaits that I am going to try for the same reasons you are inquiring about.  It is advertised as being heavier.

Imho the best “anything” for skipping in the one that is heavy enough to fully load your rod, maybe even overload the tip a little.  For me the hardest part of skipping is dialing in the exact amount of force, so lures on the lighter side for a given rod give me more trouble then a heavier one.

So would it make more sense to use a magnum size (7 inch) for skipping with a baitcaster?  Heavier bait, larger surface area to skip, may even get better quality fish...

I can get an average of 8-10 skips on my 3/8th oz finesse jigs (with rage bug so maybe 1/2 ounce total), since it has a decent amount of weight and it has a flat bottom from the rage bug, my thinking is that a magnum fluke will achieve more of those principals than the super fluke.

Ever since I tried the Zman jerkshads I don't use anything else. They are scented and super soft but I still do like the caffeine shad's.

I don't know if they are any more dense than the ones mentioned above or not, I just like the action they have on them better, but I use Big Bite Baits Jerk Minnow.   No clue if they skip better or not though.  They do have an awesome shimmy to them as they sink that makes the tail flutter back and forth.

Oh yeah, and $2.99/pack doesn't hurt either.

Yeah, that is attractive.  I have them wishlisted.  Now I just need some place where they carry them to have enough other stuff that I want in stock to make a freight prepaid order.

You know I have to say it…..the Yamamoto DShad is my choice for fluke skipping.  For fluke style baits in that size, 5 inch, the DShad is denser and heavier.  If you move up in size to the Super Flukes, or you use a weighted hook, that will change.  The DShad is made out of the same plastic as a Senko so there’s that. ?
