PressuredFishing Posted June 13, 2021 Posted June 13, 2021 so I fish really clear lakes but only really fish mono. I thought for finesse tequiniques would anyone fish with a floro leader to mono? I mean I do it all the time with trout fishing and mono and floro knot better than braid and floro, so I was just curious if anyone does this in clear water lakes? Quote
Captain Phil Posted June 13, 2021 Posted June 13, 2021 I am not a big believer in braided line. It has it's uses, but I don't find it to be best in every situation. I often tie floro leader to my mono in clear water situations. As long as the line diameter isn't too different, you can use a blood knot like you would for trout. If I was going to fish clear water all the time, I would use straight floro with a mono backing. I can't remember a time when a mono blood knot failed me. I have lost some big fish using braided line when the knot to the lure failed. Quote

I use the blood knot a ton for fly fishing as well, making my tapered leaders. Its such a good knot for anything but braid. Im glad im not sounding wierd by doing mono to floro. the only time the knot has popped on me was when I was snagged. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 13, 2021 Super User Posted June 13, 2021 I hardly ever use a leader, but I do use mono backing on reels that I put fluoro on. Does that count? I had gotten away from using the Blood Knot, but I just put some 14# Sniper on a baitcast reel. I used the Blood Knot to splice the mono to the fluoro. I think in the old days I was using too many wraps. Five wraps made for a small knot and it held up when I pulled on it with more force than I'd ever exert on the rod fighting a fish. Quote
Super User WRB Posted June 13, 2021 Super User Posted June 13, 2021 Why? First and foremost bass are not line shy fish, trout are. Line diameter has a direct impact on lure action followed by proper hook sizes. I suggest you try Maxima Ultra Green 5# Copolymer line for finesse presentations or straight Sunline Sniper 7#. Both about the same strength and diameter, UG has stronger knot strength and abrasion resistance. Tom . 2 Quote

I did not know bass where not line-shy, I have been reading and I keep hearing that they are in the clearer water but maybe its just to sell the expensive fluorocarbon. I will try this, and will look into some of these line brands 1 hour ago, new2BC4bass said: I hardly ever use a leader, but I do use mono backing on reels that I put fluoro on. Does that count? I hear you with the blood knot, its really a wierd knot when it comes to line size, when Im trout fishing and do 5 it will slip on 2lb test lol, but on bass if I do 5 it will do good. Im learning so much with the help of you guys, and I really appreciate it! Quote
