I took my wife to the Orlando airport yesterday sending her to NJ. With a little time on my hands I went to BPS. Walked around for over an hour. Up and down the many aisles of baits, rigging, line and accessories.  Every time I stopped to be tempted by the Bait Monkey, I realized I already have this or that and don't need/want anymore. It was kind of surreal and I left without buying anything. I am thankful to have so much stuff, but it was kind of a let down to leave empty handed. Now if I had some thousands to drop on side/downscan electronics, power poles or high end trolling motor, it would certainly have been a different story. LOL

Doesn't happen to me often...but some times...

There is a Cabela's, BPS, and Scheels here in Omaha...all three are "sort-of" on the way home from work : )

I was in BPS just yesterday...and thought prices were a little high on a few items (Fluro and Senko's...), so I didn't get anything while at the store. Stopped by my local wal-mart...and yep...FC was $3 cheaper, and Senko's were $1 less.

My wife and I went to the Orlando Bass Pro Shop last Saturday.  We hadn't been in a long time.  We were shocked to see all the bare shelves that had been picked clean.   There was only one or two bass boats on the floor and we were told they were not for sale. The salesman said we would need to order one and wait 12 weeks for delivery.  They had plenty of shirts and shorts.  Why even have store if there's nothing you want to buy? They should change their name.

I find that's happening to me more and more often, to be honest. I'm pretty well set as far as anything I need goes, and I'm pretty much just restocking when I buy anything.

My next major fishing-related outlay is gonna be some electrical work on the boat, fixing some stuff that I just don't think I'll be able to let myself ignore. It's not unsafe, it's just stupid, and it aggravates me to look at it and think about the fact that somebody did this kind of work on purpose.

The bait aisles and rod/reels were pretty well stocked, but I agree that the boats were sparse which was a disappointment. The real buzzkill was hand loading equipment, nearly nothing.

That happens to me all of the time.  I try not to collect lures, and I know I've got enough already and don't really have room to store more stuff I will rarely use.  So I typically only look if I go into the store looking for something specific ahead of time.  And even then, it's mostly just to replace stuff.  Otherwise, I spend more time looking at rods and reels and dreaming about the day my wife says it's okay to spend half a grand on a single rod.

I never bought into the magic lure theory.  I always figure they're not biting what I'm throwing because I'm not in the right area, or I'm fishing it wrong.  I never assume it's because I'm throwing the wrong thing.

Hell yeah! All the time. I want to go fishing not looking at fishing stuff.
If they sold extra hours in a day  instead of pieces of plastic with hooks on it, I’d be there

It's very hard to spend money right now.  A couple of weeks ago I logged into Tackle Warehouse and submitted a large order.  It hasn't cost me a dime.  They haven't shipped the order yet.

That only happens to me when I go to Bass Pro or Cabelas. I took my nephew to Cabelas a couple weeks ago and couldn't believe how pathetic the selection was and how ridiculous the prices were.  Pretty upsetting because I used to look forward to going there allll the time.

Yes, due to pricing it happens to me a lot.  I go in thinking I'm going to pickup something I need but find it to be price $1 per higher, so I pass.  But, it's like a woman in child birth.  I always forget that it's overpriced and keep going back ?

If I go into bass pro, I get zoom dead ringers and a white bucktail for making jigs no matter what. Some things you can’t have enough of

(Also they always have those two things while some other stores don’t)

I just stopped going to BPS a couple years ago. After several disappointing trips, I just abandoned it.

this!

I wish they would sell nicer Shimano, St. Croix and Loomis Rods again. They mainly have BPS brand rods. No thanks!

Not a fan of their apparel/shoes either. It's cheap quality. The Cabela's branded stuff was so much better. They are following the model of most retailers. Copy their vendors merchandise, offer it at a lower price point and then cut them out.

Best buddy, his wife, and other friends were long time employees of Cabela's...i'm talking since the 1980's(!). They all lived in Sidney, NE, corporate HQ. I actually met Jim Cabela once...way back in the 1990's.

Lots has changed with Cabela's through the years...final straw was BPS purchase...My buddy and his wife no longer work for Cabela's. Sad deal.

I have noticed their product line and selection leave much to be desired from the "old days."

Things change...

I haven't been in a BPS in 10 years is guess and haven't ordered from there in 4 or 5. Tackle warehouse has been my go to...they have better selection, prices, sales and customer service. Other then that I get odds and ends stuff at wal mart and my local Scheels because I usually get gift cards for Xmas.

Only thing I've ordered from BPS in the past year was

1 - Extreme Qualifier 3700 bag...which they're now phasing out so can't get another unless from the auction site.

1 - BPS Advanced Angler 3600 - slight redesign of the Cabelas bag...already had a Cabelas one and two is all I need.

That's it...and since my bag situation is settled - I don't even look at BPS/Cabelas site anymore.

It doesn't happen much for me, but I have gone into BPS and "mom & pop" tackle shops and left empty handed a few times.

I go to a BPS if I have time to kill and one close by,  but I no longer go out of my way to go to one anymore.  I usually leave empty handed because their prices on baits are ridiculous.  I inevitably get a gift card or 2 from family or friends at Christmas and use those to stock up on Stik-O's.  I do have some rods and reels from them and always enjoy using them and will solidly recommend to anyone that asks.  Other than that, I just have no use for them much anymore.  I don't need their vacations.  That's all they seem to want to sell anymore

The vacation people stalking me is the main reason I quit going to the one outside of Baltimore. Last time they tried to hit me up I told them my parole officer said I could not leave the state which ended the conversation.

Exactly.  I was in one about a month ago killing a little time messing with gear and baits.  9am on like a Tuesday.  Probably 6 people in the whole store.  One of those vacation people started walking towards me and I held up my hand and said politely, "Please do not bother me about a vacation"  She started her spiel anyway.  I just turned around walked away from her and out the door.  Momentarily ruined what was an easy carefree morning for me.

Same here. June 17th ship date for an order I placed on May 30. $40 worth of squirrel tail and grande bass shaky head plastics.

I will admit that the bulk of what I buy at my local BPS is mostly FC and soft plastics. My local Walmart only has a very few select colors of zoom and culprit plastics which for the most part forces me to go to BPS and pay a dollar more because TW is still taking forever to ship. I do however, enjoy actually handling a rod/reel in person there and looking for it cheaper online if I can find it cheaper.

I have enough soft plastics to last a long time.  I have reached the point where I question how many of them will get used.  Hard baits are my issue, and where the Monkey gets me.  The main problem is that it seems that I have outgrown brick and mortar stores.  While they are still good for some terminal tackle, my taste have expanded past the mainstream manufacturers like Strike King and Rapala.  When I stop by them to buy something like Gammy EWGs, I always look through the aisles for an impulse buy, but it never happens anymore where I walk out of their with anything tackle related that I did not stop in to buy.

again i was at fleetfarm yesterday and didnt even go to the fishing section because i have all i need and am bored looking at store tackle.

When i got home i went downstairs and watched some tv and looked at the screen and then glanced over to my tackle box and some lures i have hanging by the fireplace from my last trip to dry out. Yep they still look the same and soon i will put them in the box and head out this weekend.
