CountryboyinDC Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 Looks like a good opportunity to get shot to me. If any belligerents on that boat have any type of situational awareness, the jet packers are done. Boarding an underway ship is probably a tough proposition I'm sure, but I'm pretty sure this technique about as useful as the gun that shoots around corners. Neat, but not practical. 2 Quote

Yep, they need both hands to control the jets so while in flight they will be defenseless. Maybe deploy the "killer drones" first. Quote

I assume it's for night ops, but the safest training is in broad daylight. 23 minutes ago, Bubba 460 said: Yep, they need both hands to control the jets so while in flight they will be defenseless. What would happen if the flying soldier hit a June Bug and instinctively tried to wipe it off his face? I bet that would make for some very exciting aerobatics... ...like when you let go of an inflated but untied balloon and the escaping air propels it all over the place. "THHHFFFPPPTTT...." 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 This looks more useful as a rescue tool in its current state. Looks like slightly more functional than what we see at football pregame shows every Sunday. 1 Quote

Even those fail, just ask the Rangers that had to scale the cliff at Point du Hoc with knives and bayonets. I'm not trying to say this isn't neat, just doesn't have a practical application. It's like those waterjet boards or something. 1 hour ago, Michigander said: I assume it's for night ops Surely you jest. This will be quiet like when they turn on the helicopter's "whisper mode". No, it's much easier to shoot something you can see than something you can hear. Unless you're of the opinion that broad daylight would increase survivability. I'm pretty sure 'whisper mode' is just Hollywood. Helicopters, in general, are loud. Closest you get to quiet is autorotation but that's a totally different situation. Quote

Oh it has plenty of practical applications, it's just that attempting to retake a hijacked ship with armed bad guys... this might not be the best approach. 1 Quote

No, I would guess that I might know a little something about what increases your likelihood of being shot when you're part of an assault force. Broad daylight would make it marginally easier to shoot someone on one of those contraptions, but it would be reasonably easy either way. Quote
