Florent Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 Hi everyone, first time posting here! I’m looking at getting a light spinning setup for worms and I’m debating what line to put on the reel. So far, I’ve been using 10lb braid with a leader, but I’m thinking of going full fluoro or maybe have a braid backing + half of the reel with light fluoro (I’m thinking 6lb). I’ve spooled a spinning reel before with fluoro and it was a disaster. I had less experience then, maybe I spooled it in the wrong direction, not sure. All I remember is that the line memory was horrible. What’s your experience with a setup like this? Any recommendation? Quote
Russ E Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I only put fluoro on casting reels. Spinning reels get braid with leader or straight mono. Fluorocarcarbon line generally has too much memory for spinning reels in my opinion. 5 Quote
Super User MickD Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 FC in order to be soft enough has to be so low in pound test that it will be very fragile, easily damaged. I don't think FC is appropriate for spin. If you go only 10 pound test or similar with braid you don't even need a leader unless you want one. I use a leader so I'm not cutting off main line all the time, even if I don't need it for avoiding the fish seeing the line. But fish can't see the very fine braid even in very clear water. They are focused on the lure and the line is very thin. 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 I have Seaguar red label fluorocarbon line on 7 spinning setups. 4 of them have 6# and 3 of them have 10#. I have no problem with it. However, I can’t use more than 10#. 1 Quote
desmobob Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I tried it once, spooled correctly, and didn't like it. I don't remember the brand, but it would have been 10lb. test or lighter. And the brand/type of FC may have a lot to do with it... lots of guys do it. You probably need the very good stuff to make it work well. Quote
Todd2 Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I'd stick to braid or 6 to 10lb mono. I never liked the way fluoro handled on spinning reels. But then again, I mostly use mono on everything. Quote
Bass Junke Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I don't like braid on spinning reels. I don't like leaders. I used 8lb Sunline Sniper on a spinning setup for a season. It was fine, a little springy at first, but it settled down and I fished a whole season with that setup. I have pretty much settled on some form of co-poly. Lately it has been P-Line. Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 Long time fan of braid on bait-casters, and mono on spinning gear (30+ years). Tried FC on my spinning rig and HATED it (10lb test). Had braid on one of my spinning rods...never felt right. Did not like the idea of braid to FC leader, but told myself I had to try it. Fished it on last trip...took a few days...but now I'm a fan. Ordered up some 10lb hi-vis yellow braid and will be spooling up my spinning rods this weekend. FC leader preferred vs. Mono. Worked great with NED, weightless senko, even big walleye jigs with minnow. Quote
Super User Bird Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 Prefer straight braid or braid to leader. You may be fine with bigger spooled spinning reels using Flouro. I've also heard that pre-stretching the Flouro eliminates most of the memory. If you must, use a quality line like Seaguar or Sunline NOT Berkeley Vanish. Quote
plawren53202 Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 Add me to the list of folks who tried straight fluoro on a spinning reel and hated it. That prompted me to switch to braid/leader for all spinning combos, many moons ago, and I have never looked back. However, if you want to stay away from braid/leader and looking for something a step up from mono, I'd try one of the good copolymers. I've had good success with Sufix Advance, P-Line, and Yo-Zuri Hybrid. All of these seem to have considerably less stretch, and more sensitivity, than straight mono--but still soft and manageable like mono. 1 Quote
huZZah Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I have 12lb floro on a 7’ M spinning rig. Use it for weightless T rig and the like. It’s fine. Great even. Tried all 8lb floro on my 6’ ml panfish rod and hated it. It just didn’t do right. It’s straight 6lb mono now. Toyed with idea of 10lb straight braid. Or hi vis to leader. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 The only spinning reel that I have fluorocarbon on is my crappie rig. And the only reason I use it on that is because I rarely cast it more than a few feet. I mostly just use it for jigging. I've tried it on a few others. It works fine for a while, but it always winds up getting knotted in the middle. It's just not worth the hassle for me. I now use a light braid with fluorocarbon leaders on my spinning rods. It's much less frustrating that way, even if I do have to retie the leaders often. Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 I've got straight FC on three of my spinning rigs 1000-reel, ML/MF rod - 6# InvizX 2000-reel, M/F rod - 8# InvizX 2000-reel MH/MF rod - 8# InvizX I did a full treat with KVD while spooling up, and touch-ups with KVD night before fishing trips. So far I've had no issues - I'm really happy with it. Good quality line, treat with KVD - should have no issues using FC on spinning gear...just don't go too high in line diameter...pound test doesn't matter, it's the diameter on spinning reels that matter. 1 Quote
thunderblack Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I haven't read all the posts but go with some light (6lb,8lb, 10lb) Berkley Fireline in smoke. Love it on spinning gear. Super strong. Its take a trip or two for the line to loosen up but its a favorite in our house. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 I use 6lb and 8lb Trilene XL 100% FC and have had no issues. I have also tried Invizx for spinning gear. It worked fine but I liked the Trilene better. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted June 8, 2021 Global Moderator Posted June 8, 2021 Floro on spinning: no thanks. Mono is better AND cheaper the problem we all encounter is that we think it’s worse because it’s cheaper 3 Quote
mrpao Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I use #6 fluorocarbon on two of my 2500 size reels. I spray with KVD line conditioner and I've had no problems. Just be sure to use a nice limp fluro and you'll be fine. I use Seagur invizx and Daiwa J-Fluro. I'm sure other quality brands would work as well. I like the fluro because of the slack line sensitivity. It's better than braid on mono. Quote
hokiehunter373 Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 I've got 6# sunline sniper on my spinning rod and it's been flawless Quote

Given how the 15# has worked on my MH/F BC rig - I'd go Tatsu as well...but I'm not made of money. I can get 12# and under InvizX local for $20 a spool without a sale (it's their normal price). Quote

This all day. I've made the mistake of putting 10lb red label on a spinning reel and having a nightmare. The key is expensive thin line, usually 6-8lb and proper rigging. In addition to KVD there is also a trick where you can place the spool in warm water while you spool it to reduce memory. I like sunline for spinning reels. I'm also really surprised nobody has mentioned having to deal with the inaccuracy of braided line on a spinning reel. It definitely takes a bit to get used to but you can be far more accurate with FC line on a spinning reel, although braid will admittedly give you a large distance boost in casting. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 9, 2021 Global Moderator Posted June 9, 2021 I've got 8lb AbrasX on one reel and 8lb Tatsu on one. Both work very well, no line treatments needed. Quote
rangerjockey Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 I've gotten away from the braid/leader deal and gone back to flouro. I use Trilene 100% in the green tint without any problems. Quote
Florent Posted June 9, 2021 Author Posted June 9, 2021 Thanks all for the great insights; it's crazy how wide a range of opinions are out there haha. My take aways is that I should research co-polymer lines and stay away from the cheap fluoro if I'm going with a whole spool of it. At this point, I'm tempted to use a backing of #10 braid and put a few yards of fluoro leader (#6) on top of it just to see how it behaves. If I like it, I can try full fluoro next re-spool, otherwise I can just leave it as is and go back to braid + leader which I'm used to. 1 Quote
