Super User Deleted account Posted June 9, 2021 Super User Posted June 9, 2021 I don't think there are many if any secret spots anymore. But one can certainly have some that seem that way, for a while anyway. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 9, 2021 Super User Posted June 9, 2021 Y'all think I'm giving out a "secret" spot here on the world wide web...ROTFLMAO! 1 Quote
BustedSwimbait Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 I've got what I consider a "secret spot" but I'm sure people know about it. They're just never there while I'm out. 1 Quote

David 7 Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 There is a nearby pond that gets very little pressure which is my honey hole. Also I sometimes feel like stretches of the river are kind of like a secret spot because everyone neglects it for the more popular recreational lakes nearby. Which I’ll never understand; you fish where the fish are. Quote

When I started kayak fishing I pictured myself just exploring bodies of water. Most of my friends are addicted to one lake. They never go anywhere. It’s a Great Lake, and rarely skunks anyone. Me and this one guy are the explorers. We both google earth the area and find tempting juicy looking locations. im burning lots of gasoline. My oil changes happen way too often. When you land in a fantastic, clean, beautiful lightly fished lake. Mouth shut? “ I didn’t see nutin!”?? Both of us agreed we take this one to the grave. We missed the spring-fest, but next season!!!….I love trying new lakes. It’s a puzzle right when you launch that kayak. That first fish is by like mating the first two puzzle pieces. It just gets easier from there. I used to have some personal spots, but here in california with a population counting the the millions, it is very hard if not impossible to find a secret spot. First off, we live in a desert, so there are few bodies of water that are heavily pressured. at least we are blessed to have very large fish due to dfg stockings and long seasons, but a amazing day here in socal is like 2 or three bass lol, if you get more thats rare, or impossible due to the amount of fishing pressure. schplurg Posted June 9, 2021 Posted June 9, 2021 Secret spots can be found on rivers and creeks. I have hacked and slashed my way to spots I know nobody fishes because there's no way they could have gotten there, at least not recently (no signs of hacking or slashing). Most anglers tend to fish the easy to get to spots (where all the litter is). The good spots are a longer walk, of course. The secret spots are sometimes in between the "known" spots, or just farther away. Bring a machete and try not to leave an obvious path. If people say, "I haven't fished there I can't find a way to get there", that's where I'm headed. I'm not always adventurous, just saying there are spots, you just gotta work for it Quote
Super User gim Posted June 10, 2021 Super User Posted June 10, 2021 There is a mid sized river I often fish in midsummer for brown bass. For years I’d rarely see anyone out there because it’s surrounded by private land, it’s too shallow to launch a normal sized boat, and it can have a lot of bugs. That changed a little last season because the COVID crowd found it. I just hope that most of the smallmouth were released. If a fair amount were harvested, it will take years to rebound. 1 Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted June 10, 2021 Super User Posted June 10, 2021 One of my best spots growing up was on the river about 3 miles from my house. "Our" section of the river is pretty unremarkable EXCEPT this one place where there is a riffle and then a slight bend where the current scoured out a deep spot on the outside of it and large rocks bordered the edge. Smallies and largemouth hung out there in numbers and size decent enough to actually make it worth my while to walk the mile or so down a farm access lane and across a field (in retrospect, the walk was actually quite pleasant). That is where I got my first real taste of "game fishing." Quote
CrankFate Posted June 10, 2021 Posted June 10, 2021 No. I fish almost exclusively in mostly extremely well known public areas. Sometimes crowded places. It doesn’t matter what you do or what you catch, the people sitting there on a bucket waiting for a bite, they never catch on. They often tell me I don’t know what I’m doing because my rod (rated for 50lb braid) is too light and because the fish hate to eat things that move. Quote
trout123 Posted June 10, 2021 Posted June 10, 2021 There was this well known swim hole with a campground not even 30 feet from the water people would go to all the time. It was loaded with rainbow and brown trout but nobody thought to fish it. Well me and my dad went for about 2 hours in the morning while everyone was sleeping in, more trout then we could count, our biggest was a 20 inch rainbow and a 24+ brown that was easily 5 pounds. Well people must've heard us talking and we told one guy we caught a few small ones on the way out and the next time we went there were already 5 people fishing it and not a single person caught any. That was my secret spot. Quote
Rich12 Posted August 27, 2021 Posted August 27, 2021 All the years I guided, one thing always amazed me. Would be at lunch with clients and someone always ask, where did you catch them. My answer a lot would be 12 feet of water off grass lines. I can tell you how many times I would see that person that afternoon fishing a grass line. Yep, you guessed it. The guys would have his boat in 12 feet of water throwing his lure toward the shoreline direction. Now keep in mind I told this guy the fish were on grass in 12 feet of water. Here the moron sits with his boat in 12 feet of water with the bass under his boat tossing his lure away from them. Saw it every time. 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted August 28, 2021 Super User Posted August 28, 2021 Secret spot? I'd settle for any spot that produces a few bites this summer even if 10 other boats and kayaks were already there ? The bass fishing is so poor right now in my area that the fishing guides are calling it "fair at best" for an hour or so at first light. At this point I'm ready to hang it up until the water cools down in October. I love my kayak, but I miss bank fishing the smaller lagoons where I used to live in SC. Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted August 28, 2021 Super User Posted August 28, 2021 I fish a lot of small waters that, while not really "secret", are a bit off the beaten path and not widely known except to locals who live close. A couple are even hard to see on satellite view. Some have a boat launch. Others require a carry-down or a paddle-in or a hike. Many have very limited parking. I keep the names and locations of these places to myself. I had to put in some time and effort to find them; so too should you. Quote
Way north bass guy Posted August 28, 2021 Posted August 28, 2021 One of my favourite local places to go is “the bay” as we call it. Better known as Georgian Bay, and more specifically the area known as the 30 000 islands region. Not so much of a secret spot as much as that there’s so darn many “spots”. Between all the islands, and countless other underwater shoals, I could fish this place every day for the rest of my life and not likely hit the same spot twice. It’s pretty easy to find a “spot”, that will be pretty close to a secret, mostly because everyone else has a billion of their own just like it all up and down the entire eastern shore of the bay. 4 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted August 28, 2021 Super User Posted August 28, 2021 One of my hunting clubs has a beaver pond that's a catch fish til you're tired kind of place. It's a 4 mile Side x Side ride then push 30 yards through thick weeds but it's worth it. 1 Quote

Holetail Posted August 29, 2021 Posted August 29, 2021 Other than my private hunting club lake 600 miles away that no one bass fishes in, I don’t really have any secret spots. I have figured out one retention pond here that sees some pressure. The other day I stopped there after work and another guy pulled up and was asking if there are fish in the pond. Decided to walk the bank hoping to “see” some fish all the while talking about another spot with 8 pounders nearby. Had a feeling this guy is part of the bucket brigade so I purposely missed a couple bites while he was around! Gotta do what ya gotta do to protect what few spots I have. Quote
Tatsu Dave Posted August 29, 2021 Posted August 29, 2021 Nothing much secret anymore, just some harder to get in and out of. Catch and release is best thing to preserve a spot but others don't operate that way too much anymore. Even dangerous shallow rocky stuff is accessible with small boats. If you got a good one enjoy it, things got really bad this year from all the pandemic fisherman and they don't seem to be going anywhere. Quote
