I'm wondering if anyone likes and still uses the original Scum Frog?  I got back into frog fishing two seasons ago, and had fair success with the Scum Frog.                     I've bent the hooks up a little, and sharpened them good.             Still, like others have posted, I've missed a good number of strikes. Frog fishing is addicting, and frustrating at the same time. I can't blame the missed strikes on the Scum Frog or my tackle. Hopefully this season will be better with the hookup ratio.                                                  Do we have some here on BR that like the original Scum Frog?

You are setting the hook too early.  The SF doesn't need its hooks turned up as it is gloriously soft, but it is super easy to set the hook on sight instead of feel which will make you miss fish.

I'm waiting, sometimes too long I think. A lot of fish seem to swat these frogs, and miss them compltetly.

I don't have any of the originals but that's ONLY because the mats I fish are usually pretty big and thick and usually require a long cast to put the frog where I want it to be.  These are pretty little.  There are times I fish in tighter or just want something a little smaller.  That's when I tie on a pad crasher Jr. without a skirt.  Removing the skirt turns it into a spastic little nugget that works incredibly well for those times when there isn't really a cohesive mat but the vegetation is just a little too heavy for a trebled bait.  It's like a tiny weedless spook.  You can walk the heck out of them and make them jump around.  I have no reason to believe you couldn't do the same thing with a Scumfrog original AND it would be more budget friendly.  Why did I choose a PCjr. for this?  I didn't.  I had an old one I was going to tie on one day and the skirt crumbled.  I tied it on anyway and wheeeeeee doggies!

Story of my life.....lol.  I tend to be pretty pragmatic about things in my life.  Even bass fishing.  I don't get all caught up in trying all the new techniques or enter tournaments or spend a billion dollars on equipment or usually even get upset if I have bad day.  And then there is frogging!  All my gear is fairly basic and generic, except my frog rod.  When I pull IT out, I feel like I'm holding Excalibur and am readying for battle!  I guess we all have our thing.  I think the thing about it for me is that it will ALWAYS be hard.  No matter how good at it you might think you are, you'll never be THAT good at it.

As I’ve said on here many times the original (grn/pepper) is my go to, be all frog. I’ve been using them almost since they came out in the ‘90’s.

I’ll use the Trophy Series once in awhile but there’s nothing sold that has the hook up ratio that the little one has.

One of biggest advantage of them is their consistency. They are virtually unchanged for the 20+ yrs they’ve been on the market, plus of course is their softness. No need to touch the hooks.

Once they get it, they got it.

The original Scum Frog in green or black is the only one I really use. Hook up ratio and price are fantastic compared to some others I have tried and durability doesn't seem to be an issue. It is certainly not the prettiest/most realistic looking frog out there, but most of the time I'm not fishing it in open water anyways nor do I think it matters that much. The one issue with them in my opinion is how light weight they are. To solve this,  just pop a couple BBs or a small bullet weight in them and they are good to go.

One time I took a white one and added a swivel and a willow blade to each hook and fished it like a buzzbait and could pause it because it floats.

Snag Proof frogs were popular in the Delta out west in the 60’s  before the Scum Frog.  What I didn’t like about Scum Frog was the hook and they filled with water too fast.

I had a buddy that always threw those Lunkerhunt Frogs with the realistic swimming legs.  About every other fish one would get torn off.  He'd burn through those things like most people burn through stick worms.  Cute and all but I think those hyper-realistic paint jobs and such on baits....pretty much ANY baits.... are to catch fishermen.  Not fish

I have heard a LOT of people make this complaint about Scumfrogs and I have literally NEVER had this problem with them.  Weird.

If I remember right when I first started using them that was a minor issue.
Just bring it in, squeeze and cast again.
No big deal.

But as @Jaderose said, It’s not a problem anymore and hasn’t been for years.

Honestly, even if it did it wouldn’t matter.

The original scum frog is the most productive frog for me and the hookup ratio is phenomenal.  They look like crap, but fish do not seem to care.  I do not bend the hooks or anything...fish them straight from the package.
