Pond I'm thinking about hitting up tomorrow has some pretty decent sized carp in it and I'm planning on throwing a couple of cans of corn in the water and coming back a bit later to see if I can't catch one. How should I rig when targeting them? Should my bait stay close to the surface or should I put it lower in the water column?

I always fished bottom after corn chumming, as that's where the corn is.

On the bottom . I like to use my old bass flipping rods and a baitcast reel . Use a heavy 1 ounce weight and carolina rig an Octupuss hook baited with a couple of kernels of whole corn short leader say 1 foot  , keep the line tight . Stick in a good rod holder and tighten it , no slack , pop a beer and sit back . The carp will suck in the corn , feel that weight get scared and bolt , hooking itself . The rod will look like its going to get pulled in .

I use to have a camper on a shallow bay and carp fished several times a week . I developed my own rig that worked with corn or dough balls . If I can find a photo I will post it .

Here is a photo of my rig and it works great . The europeans take their carp fishing seriously and they use hair rigs . One day while carp fishing at my camp I decided to make something similar .

One picture is worth a thousand words.

Slide a 1 ounce  sinker on the line and tie a swivel for a carolina rig . On the leader add a bobber stop , a short piece of plastic tube . I simply stripped a piece off an electrical wire . Then slide on an octopuss hook . Crimp the barbs on a treble hook and tie it on. All the treble hook does, is act as a  bait holder . Add your corn or doughball { I like a doughball made out of Wheaties} to the treble then slide it all together .The plastic tube keeps the bait in line with the octopuss hook ,only tie to the treble not the octopuss hook .    Place in a rod holder and keep the line tight . the carp sucks in the bait , feels resistance and either bolts or blows the bait out . When it blows the bait out the octopuss hook gets him and it bolts . It is some fun fishing .
