Hey all,

Broke a rod today.  Going to replace it with a Falcon BuCoo.   Here are the models/specs:

Trap Caster 7' MH/MF 1/4-3/4oz

Swim Jig 7'2 MH/MF 1/8-3/8oz

Deep Runner 7'3 MH/MF 3/8-3/4oz

I have BuCoo and Lowrider rods so I have a good idea of how Falcon rates a rod, but the 7'2 MH Swim Jig model strikes me as not like the others.  Can anyone help to clear this up?

I have a Dobyns 703c so I don't think the Trap Caster makes sense, and I'm leaning toward the 7'3 as it seems most similar to the rod I'm replacing.  Thought I'd check in with y'all first!

This is going to be a utility rod, not necessarily lure specific.  It'll see most of it's use when I'm on foot and only carry a few sticks.

Thanks!

I like the trap caster. Handles 1.5, 2.5, medium divers, traps, spooks, poppers, etc well. Also strong enough back bone to throw 3/8 oz chatterbait and spinnerbaits.

Confusing but Falcon rod guys swear the swim jig is the best trap rod on the market. The ratings are a bit weird but everyone says it has no problem handing swim jigs plus trailers. I don’t own one.

Ive called Falcon probably half a dozen times and they have always steered me in the right direction

Agreed.  My experience with their staff has been positive.  Everyone I've talked to always seems like they have knowledge and experience with the product.  That's a big selling point for me.

Can't help you but I understand the confusion. That's light for a swim jig rod.

Yes.  I look at those numbers as more of a guideline, but that's a similar rating to my ML spinning rod ?

Yeah, big red flag for me personally. I throw swim jigs where a lot of people throw frogs. LoL.

You're not crazy far, pm me if you're in town and we can go out on the Triton.

Best Swim Jig rod I've found, given my preferences. https://cajunrods.com/collections/black-bayou™-large-species-freshwater-rods

The swim jig originated as a Mike McClelland signature model for 1/8-3/8 oz swim jigs. I believe all of his rods had ratings to match the actual intention of the rod model, not a generic rating.

The trapcaster is a great rod and works well with just about any presentation . The swim jig rod is good for swim jigs, light texas rig, topwater and lipless.  I just didn’t like the 7’2” length.  I prefer 7’

Same. I’m throwing swim jigs in pads with a heavy rod and 50lb braid. But that’s the issue with labeling something a swim jig rod. Light wire 1/4 oz swim jigs and heavy wire 3/8 oz swim jigs are two very different baits

I have two Bucoo rods. Their rod ratings are similar to Dobyns, but in my opinion softer.

One is a 7 foot med light fast action spinning rod.  it is more light than med/lt. and closer to moderate action

the other is a heavy/fast 7ft 3in casting rod.

It is somewhere between medium and medium/heavy. with a moderate fast action

I had a similar experience with the Irod 703C MHF which is rated 3/16-3/8 oz.  So I sent an email to the company.  I was assured it was a true MH power rod.   Unfortunately it is a fairly new rod and due to health circumstances I've only had it out once and only used one lure on it.  (Was only out for a short period.)  So I can't really comment on its lure weight handling abilities.  I have to assume it is probably similar to what jbrew said about the Mike McClelland signature model for 1/8-3/8 oz swim jigs.  And that is that the ratings do not include trailer, just lure rating and probably takes into count that true lure weight is normally quite a bit higher than the lures rating.  Example: 1/2 oz. War Eagle Spinnerbait actual weight measured .82 oz.

I talked to a Falcon staff member today.  Said it fishes just as you would expect a MH with a 1/4-3/4oz rating.

The MF action would likely make casting a 1/8oz possible, but it's unlikely I would ever intend to try.  He assured me that going over 3/8oz wouldn't over power that model.

Either way, I'm leaning heavily toward the 7'3 MH/MF 3/8-3/4.... Unless the 7'2 Lowrider comes back in stock ?

All,

Thanks for the feedback and dialogue.  As soon as I saw TW had a couple 7:1 Curado K's in stock I pulled the trigger.  But, I digress.  This post was about a rod.  I chose the BuCoo SR 7'3 MH/MF Deep Runner model.   Gave some serious thought toward the 7'2 LowRider Swim Jig (I really like my other LowRiders) but by the time they come back in stock the reels will be long gone.

Thanks, again!

Could say the same for the rod I got.  Throws a trap a long way and it's just soft enough to really let them get the bait.  I caught 3 last weekend and they were not getting off.   It's also got enough backbone when you hang it in vegetation.

I like my Trap Caster.   It is the only rod that I've paid full retail on, going back 15 years or so.   I came across one - was looking to upgrade my lipless crank action - and I bought it right then.  Paired with a Shimano Calais ( recently cleaned & tuned ) and 20 pound mono, I can throw half ounce lipless cranks a long ways AND you have great hook setting ability when you get bit a ways from the boat.
