Super User Wayne P. Posted December 7, 2009 Super User Posted December 7, 2009 Remember the discussion a few months ago about what was showing in the creek channel when I was doing the thermocline shots? Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 7, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 7, 2009 You were right and here is what it is: Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 7, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 7, 2009 From another angle: Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 8, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 8, 2009 No, it is a a couple of trees together in the creek channel where it makes a turn. One is horizonal and the other is standing but leaning. A post spawn hot spot. Quote
mudkart Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Great post. Lately, I've been out on Burke lake here in NOVA w/ a buddy who just got SI on his boat. I cannot begin to tell you the cover we've found in just a few passes. The first day we tried it, we found a school of bait (and bass lurking) on top of a sunken tree ~ 10 min after launching. He got the lowrance HD10(?). I can almost read the depth numbers from the back of the boat. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 8, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 8, 2009 mudkart, here are some trees laying on the bottom. Quote
quanjig Posted December 8, 2009 Posted December 8, 2009 Man, I gotta save me some money and get one of those side finders!! The image quality is absolutly phenomonal. Mudkart, I imagine out at Burke you could absolutly slay them with a unit like that!! Did you catch? Quote
mudkart Posted December 9, 2009 Posted December 9, 2009 mudkart, here are some trees laying on the bottom. On the left of your pic are what the tree/brushpiles we found looked like. That the cover was wood was confirmed by what we occasionally dragged up. You could also pick out individual trees in some instances w/ the SI that I never spotted w/ my sonar (I've been over this portion of the lake with a Humminbird 565 a number of times). This lowrance unit also had something called "structure scan" (edit: its called "downscan") that looked like a high-res version of typical "downward" sonar. On his screen he could place both the SI and structure scan at once. Or, for information overload: the SI; structure scan; GPS; and color sonar all at once. The color sonar seemed to be the best option for finding schooled fish, with the caveat both of us are new to SI. I wish I had a pic of some of these screenshots, as a pic is worth more than a thousand words in this instance. Sometimes we saw "clouds" (for lack of a better term) on the SI that correlated to baitfish clouds on the color sonar (both images were on the screen at the same time). Quote

Mudkart, I imagine out at Burke you could absolutly slay them with a unit like that!! Did you catch? The lowrance is...ahem.....~ $2.3K. That is the 10" version, and the smaller screens must be less. But, wow, that 10" screen is nice. We caught alot...of shorties.... >. All on dropshot rigs. The bite stopped ~ 3 PM: this was last Friday before the snow hit Saturday. Looking back we likely hit the tail end of the feed following the dropping barometer. No complaints, I learned alot about the lake. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 9, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 9, 2009 An additional cost with the HDS units is the Structure Scan module and transducer for about $600. Humminbird will be releasing a free software upgrade next month that will add the Down Imaging feature to the Side Image units. That will give the same total available views that Lowrance has with the Structure Scan add-on. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted December 10, 2009 Super User Posted December 10, 2009 Very cool Wayne. Thanks for the update. Nice contours there. If you find any big girls there it would be fun to see a pic or two -just to complete the picture. 8-) I see you have your new SS up and running. I want one too. But I think I might feel too silly putting one on a float tube lol. Actually, no I wouldn't. But another grand into my float tube would be tough to justify to my wife. Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted December 10, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 10, 2009 Paul, if you could keep the transducer stable and tracking in a straight line, I would think you can get satisfactory performance with that technology. The screen scroll rate is adjustable so the slowest scroll rate may work very well at your fastest paddle speed. Quote
Super User Paul Roberts Posted December 10, 2009 Super User Posted December 10, 2009 Don't encourage me! Then again my wife always complains I'm tough to buy for. Quote
nubasser Posted December 11, 2009 Posted December 11, 2009 Wayne great shots and detail.I live in Hardy near Smith Mountain Lake.If my fishin buddy and myself head to Briery this Spring can you help us find some fish.We went for the first time there this October and managed to catch a few but that lake is so different to what I'm used to every place looks like it would hold fish. All the vegetation and trees look so enticing we got a little overwhelmed by it. Super User Wayne P. Posted December 11, 2009 Author Super User Posted December 11, 2009 nubasser, I sure would be pleased to assist you with figuring out Briery Creek. I'll PM you with a helpful hint to get you started. Quote
