I think it's sort of like Kleenex tissue. Kleenex is a name brand, not a description of an item. But since they were the first and the only one around at one time we often ask for a Kleenex instead of a tissue. Weed Eater was a brand of 'weed wacker'. I think they were the first to show us one long ago with the string trimmer and all. So today we often use weed eater to describe the thing.  When a company gets their name to be what everyone calls an item, they've got the corner on the market when it gets to that point.

Weed wacker.  In the old days we used a pair of grass trimming shears for tight places, and swung a grass whip on steep inclines.

There was a time back home where soda pop was called Coke. A conversation could go like this:

Sam: “Would you like a coke?

Steve: “Sure!”

Sam: “What kind?”

Steve: “7up.”

Sam: “Okay. Here you go.”

I kid you not ??

still happens in TN today

I usually call them a string of expletives when I've pulled for the hundredth time and it still hasn't started.

There's something so satisfying about hammer throwing a finicky weedeater, except when you realize now a new one has to be purchased ?‍♂️

We call them weedeaters in my part of the woods, too.  But the verb form is usually weed- whack, as in, "I weedwhacked the yard with the weedeater."

The hammer throw is mighty satisfying.  The last thing I launched was a Humminbird portable fish finder.  It is now resting comfortably on the bottom of Lake Poutrincourt, near the mouth of the Normandin River, in Quebec.

And a peanut may be added to the “coke” or “dope”

Before I scrolled down, I would have called it a "fence."  But the thingamajig at the bottom, I call a weed wacker or string trimmer.  Usually, it's the former.

How about my fellow northern folk.... snow blower or snow thrower? I call it a snow blower

Snow machine or a snowmobile? Snowmobile here in Michigan, but in Alaska and I believe Canada they call it a snow machine.

It's snow machine in the UP too. I've been sternly corrected before. LoL.

It's snowmobile in the lower peninsula too, but up there, well, they do things their own way and I'm content to let them be. ?

Where I am originally from, its called a snowmobile and I continue to call them that. Where I live now its called a "snow machine" that just sounds stupid to me.
