Super User Sam Posted June 4, 2021 Super User Posted June 4, 2021 This happened to a friend of one of my LSU friends and it is scary. Please read and share with others. This is a true story. Last night I was downtown stopped at a stoplight. Suddenly the vehicle in front of me began backing up.... I blared my horn but before I could do anything else the vehicle tapped the front end of my car. I stayed where I was. The man quickly jumped out of his car and approached my window. Not taking any risk, I cracked it just enough to talk to him. I asked for his insurance which he quickly flashed to me and said, “no damage come look.” I firmly said, “No I need a copy of your insurance.” The man just kept saying, “come out and look there’s no damage.” I stayed put!! I asked once more for his insurance assuring him that I would call the cops and then took a picture of his license plate. Next thing I knew the man darted off, got into his car and drove away. All I could think was that I had just gotten into a hit and run and hoped there really wasn’t any damage— it didn’t occur to me that this was an attempt to do so much more. I called my husband to tell him what happened and ask for advice. I explained the situation and that I hadn’t got out yet to look when he said, “Don’t get out and go somewhere well lit.” I didn’t understand but I listened. After he drove away, I got out and looked sure enough there was no damage. My husband explained that this was likely a scheme to try to get me out of the car to possibly take me. I was instantly horrified at the idea!! He asked me if the guy was in a van—he was. I’m sharing this to help make others aware of this scheme. Had I gotten out of the car when he asked me to, I might not be here writing this post. PLEASE, PLEASE be cautious as this could happen to anyone. In other scenarios there could be another car behind you for a more aggressive attempt to take you or even multiple men getting out at once to approach your car. If you are at all unsure of a situation CALL THE POLICE. I STILL DO NOT KNOW WHY I DIDNT GET OUT OF THE CAR BUT I’M REALIZING NOW THAT NOT DOING SO MAY HAVE SAVED MY LIFE. I have reported the license plate/description of the vehicle to the police. This post was written to be shared, to help warn others about a real life situation that happened/could happen to anyone!!! 1 Quote

Crappiebasser Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 There’s a lot of car thefts happening like this in Atlanta. They bump the car and when you get out to look they take the car. Quote

throttleplate Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 i have a large can of super nasty pepper spray i keep in my side door panel, its been expired for 5 years but never used. Can anyone tell me if this can is still good? I would hate to spray someone that was trying to steal my car and it doesnt work. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 4, 2021 Super User Posted June 4, 2021 LOL.....Anything labeled true story and friend of a friend is 99.999% of the time false...most urban legends start this way. This is true and it was a friend of mine or a friend of a friend etc.... Maybe the guy legit accidentally backed into her and when he wanted to validate no damage with her and she refused he said screw it and left since there was no damage....that is easily as believable as the other made up part too but it wouldn't be passed around. https://www.d1tactical.com/post/social-media-story-~-the-backup-van A quick search can see that this is a story circulating and has been for years. BigAngus752 Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 I would like to make a suggestion. Please don't tell your spouse or girlfriend about this specific incident as a "training tool" or "lesson to learn". This just induces fear without a clear way to mitigate threat. If this incident really did occur (and you can find hundreds of these stories on the internet) the likelihood that someone you know will be targeted in the same manner by a serial rapist/killer is one in a billion. If you want to give your loved one some tips on staying safe and use this as one example of what could happen then that would be appropriate. Here are some things that I would tell someone if I were to use this or any other "horror tale from the internet" as a motivator: Eyes up/head on a swivel: Distraction and not being aware of your surroundings are the two biggest threats to your personal safety. This applies to chainsaw-wielding maniacs as well as speeding drunks in big 4X4s. This can also save you from a lifetime of regret because you have looked at a text message for a brief second a million times while driving and nothing ever happened but this time a little girl on a bike rode out in front of you. Get your face out of your phone. Get your mind out of the clouds and on who is walking in front of/behind you. Turn the music down low when you are jogging so you can hear a car or footsteps. Start paying attention to the world around you. Be friendly but cautious: Smile, help people, spread cheer, love your neighbor...and have a plan to kill every single one of them that gives you cause to. We should all love our neighbors and give them the benefit of the doubt whenever possible, but you can be friendly and prepared at the same time. Have a plan: I encourage you to use mental imagery to envision how you should react to any crisis situation you think you might encounter. Don't overestimate yourself. You are not Jason Bourne. Your first though should be escape and evade. Your last resort should be to fight. Also, talk with your family and have code words or signals to indicate distress. Pick something that sounds innocuous but could not have any other possible meaning. For example: My wife would say/call/text me that my dad called or my dad stopped by. My dad died when I was 20 years old. If she sends me that signal then she knows that I'm coming for her and people are going to die. There is no mistaking that and I won't need to use any caution or hold back. The code or signal must be unmistakable. Overwhelming aggression: When you have to go to the last resort and fight then do so with every ounce of rage you can muster. It's basic natural selection at this point. The predator has much less at stake than you. Bite, kick, punch, head butt, scream, go for the eyes, ears, groin and if you are not attacking me so hard that you are actually injuring yourself in doing so then you aren't going to dissuade me because I'm bigger, stronger, and tougher than you. This is the end of your life. Make them pay before you go. My point is, it's not helpful to scare people with ugly stories. If you are worried about them then help them prepare. Even if it's just being prepared to help a stranger who was seriously injured in a car accident. We all feel better when something happens if we can act with confidence and be helpful. Good luck and God Bless. 3 1 Quote

Yup, urban legend. I did a quick search and found no credible evidence this ever actually occurred, but its been shared all over Facebook for years. 3 hours ago, TnRiver46 said: Can anyone tell me if this can is still good? The chemical probably is, but the propellant isn't. Just replace it with a new one and you're good to go. Quote
schplurg Posted June 5, 2021 Posted June 5, 2021 It happens in Mexico all the time. My brother raced the Baja 1000 three times. On the last trip there were cars lined up on the 2 lane highway of Baja just waiting to hit people and rob them, especially the racing trucks and trailers. It is very well known. The different racing teams agreed to drive close to each other to avoid this. Also, the Federales will pull you over and not let you go unless you bribe them. They don't say anything really, they just stand there waiting. For my brother it was mainly shirts and other racing gear he'd give them. He even gave away their team shirts with their names on them. He brought stuff to Mexico just for this purpose. When I went with him it was mainly FOX Racing stickers we'd hand out to the toll road workers. No hassle from cops. I've seen it myself, but like I said this was in Mexico. Most likely the woman in the OP was about to be robbed, not kidnapped, if the story is true. I have no reason to doubt it happens. Carjackings happen here. Edit to add: Heres one story in the US. https://pix11.com/news/local-news/queens/video-man-attacks-robs-2-after-collision-jackson-heights/ Quote

Seems more like a guy getting hit because he couldn't see past those cars and then got ticked off over the entire ordeal. Quote

Rochester NY had that happening almost daily for a month until it escalated to the car jackers shot a killed a elderly guy for not getting out fast enough. Cops finally caught the jackers. All under 16yr olds Quote

Just saw a video where a gentleman was pumping gas when a van pulled up, 3 men jump out and make an attempt to steal car. The man douses them with gasoline and all 3 men flee the scene. I had no idea that gas pumps had that kind of pressure as he even drenched the inside of the van. Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted June 14, 2021 Super User Posted June 14, 2021 For similar reasons, I'm scared to help people who breakdown on the side of the road these days. A lot of times they fake it just to mug you. 1 Quote
