JamesWatkins Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 I fish this pond all the time and I have tried every bait there is and the only thing that works is a spinnerbait. I have figured it is because the fish in the pond really only want a reaction strike. No jigs or plastics on the bottom work. And no twitching frogs in top work. For some reason chatterbaits do 10x worse than spinnerbaits. The pond is fairly small and I have pulled multiple 4 lbers out. It seems like when I go I fish around it once and pick up 3-6 fish, but I circle it again and nothing bites. This is because the fish I pull out of there are the only ones "hungry"? What I think is that the bass in there have so many bluegills and green brims that they dont care for lures resembling those, but they want something unusual that calls them in for a reaction bite. But once they see it they wont hit again. Any lure ideas? they seem to just like spinnerbaits, but any reccomendations for when i circle around once and then they wont hit? 1 Quote
Holetail Posted June 3, 2021 Posted June 3, 2021 Maybe try an underspin with a grub or paddletail? Maybe they like the flash of the spinner but the thump of a chatter is too much. Worth a shot at least... 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 3, 2021 Super User Posted June 3, 2021 Try different spinnerbait blade configurations both in shape & color. 3 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted June 3, 2021 Super User Posted June 3, 2021 As long as the number of lures I can get them to bite is >0, I'm good. 2 Quote
Ski213 Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 Might try soft plastics closer to the top. Fluke, trickworm, etc. 2 Quote
txchaser Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 Worth trying underspin with a paddletail (try both colorodo and willow) and a fluke. 1 Quote
Michigander Posted June 5, 2021 Posted June 5, 2021 Fluke on the second run. Or go ham with an A-Rig. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted June 6, 2021 Super User Posted June 6, 2021 I guess I'd throw the hell out of a spinnerbait. LOL. No, I'd throw topwaters until I got bites. But I'm just stupid like that. 3 2 Quote
papajoe222 Posted June 6, 2021 Posted June 6, 2021 It's impossible to say why they go after a spinnerbait and not a chatterbait. I'd stick with the a reaction type bait by first adding a trailer hook to your s/b for the second pass. They may still be reacting, but not totally committing to it, or changing your presentation, pausing occasionally, or popping the rod tip to get the skirt to flair. If no takers, change lures, but stay in the same category (chrome lipless, underspin). Still no love? Ditch the flash and try a swim jig, paddle tail on a jig head, or a crank and again, vary your retrieve before moving down the bank. Quote

Derek1 Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 This sounds like my kinda place love me a good spinnerbait bite. When I got back to the truck I’d tie on a different color spinnerbait and go around again. Then put a different one and go again. 2 Quote
Chonch12 Posted June 8, 2021 Posted June 8, 2021 If they are going for reaction type baits what about tossing a Jerkbait? Pause, snap snap, pause, snap, pause. Or something along those lines. Quote
Super User Ratherbfishing Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 I don't think you mentioned crankbaits. They are terrific reaction strike baits. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted June 8, 2021 Super User Posted June 8, 2021 I stayed in the mountains at a resort once that had 3 nice ponds with crystal clear water. I couldn't buy a bite until the sun got low. Try other baits early and late. Quote
