New guy here fishing for first time in 40 years.  Purchased a Shimano Stradic 3000.  I also have 12 pound mono in a 300 yard spool.  the 10 pound capacity for this reel is 140 yards.... I assume 12 pound will be less?  How do I know how much to put from a 300 yard spool?  Is there a maximum capacity of line edge that can identify this?  I am sure 12 pound will be less than 10 pound, I doubt I am going to actually be casting or trolling anywhere near 140 yards ever.  I do know, however, to leave room at top of reel spool, something like 1/8"?

Bought 300 yards of Sufix mainly so I could cut extra for knot tying practice.

I have this Friday OFF work for first cast since I was 13; can't wait.

Thanks!

I found out that 12 lb. mono did not feed well from a 3000-size Shimano spool. Personally, I would go to the 4000-size for 12 lb mono. I have 3 Shimano spinning reels  with the same lip diameter that you have, and I would put max low-diameter 8 lb. line on them.

If it were me, I'd try it in the yard before I went fishing.

Whatever you decide, have fun and good luck!              jj

I have the smaller stradic 2500 with 8 on it and it's fine.  I bet 12 will be ok too.  Give it a try...

Was recently taught ( after 40 years fishing intermittently) how to load a spinning reel correctly - will pass along should it matter.  you want to take the line off the end of the spool so that the way it is coiling off matches the way it coils onto the spinning reel.  If you set the spool on the floor it works pretty well.  if you get it right, loose line will NOT coil up on itself in a mess.  If you load it against the twist, that's what will happen.

perhaps I should trade back for 10 or 8 pound then?  Thanks!

I would look at the line diameter, not the test. Some lines are under-rated for test.  Because I'm a shorecaster, I would not use line greater than 10 mil (.010") in diameter. That's the diameter of  8 lb. test Trilene XL. I'm a stubborn old fart, and I got that opinion from use on the water. Shorecasters, after all, need a little distance.

If you're in a boat and don't need the distance, I'd say that you could go up to .011" and do fine. That would be 10 lb. Trilene XL.

But that's also the diameter of the other 8 lb. Sufix nylon lines, like 8 lb. Sufix Siege, 8 lb. Sufix Pro-Mix, 8 lb. Advance and 8 lb. Elite.

The 12 lb. Sufix mono lines (other than Pro-Mix) are .014" diameter. Kinda thick.

Like I said ..... good luck!  ?           jj

Thanks to the guys that replied.  I have (2) Stradics in the 3000 size I haven't spooled up yet,  and it's good to find this info prior.

OP,  Go for it!  Have a grand time.

You want to fill up modern spinning reels - up to just a couple of line diameters from the edge.

1/8 inch would be a huge waste - what you paid for in this nice was reel is how well it manages line lay to improve your cast distance.

if you really want to know exact capacity, it's not lb-test that's going to answer it for you, but line diameter.

This online line-capacity calculator is quite accurate.

Just loaded the reel with 10 pound mono.  I don't remember not being able to see the line when I was 10?  First cast is Friday.  I sincerely hope I loaded it correct; no time to practice cast at home Thursday.  ?  First cast will be first test!
