I got back into bass fishing last year and have been building up my rod and reel arsenal.  I mostly bank fish with occasional boat trips.  I throw Texas Rigs, Senkos, small spinner baits, crank baits, chatterbait, and flukes.

I currently have the following setups:

6'6" MF Daiwa Aird X/ Revos spinning reel

6'6" MF Ugly Stick Elite/ Shimano NASCI 2500 spinning reel

7.0 MHF Dobyns Fury 703 / Curado DC 6.2 ratio baitcaster

6'6" HF Dobyns Fury 664 / Curado DC 7.3 ratio baitcaster

I'm thinking I should get a Dobyns Fury 705 crank bait rod next.  I would pair with a Curado DC.  I also think I should retire the Ugly still for a better spinning rod.

Any tips much appreciated, including changing up my current setups.

Thanks,

Rick

You seem to have it covered except for cranking sticks.  You really need 2; one for smaller baits and one for larger water haulers.

Replace that with a Fury 702SF and you've got a great finesse rig.

Rest of it looks just fine - and echoing RW on the 705CB... I have one with a Fuego CT 6.3 on it and it's a great crank rig.

I think retiring that Ugly Stik is a good idea. I’d  also recommend a ML power spinning rod to replace it, since you already have the M.

Add something for deeper cranks definitely.  You can use the Ugly Stick for light cranks in the meantime, but I would replace that next.

Nice broad selection to cover numerous techniques. I would suggest the Dobyns Kaden 735 CB over the Fury.  It has the ability to fish a 1.5 SB, Lipless, and up to a 5XD size bait.  As a side note, it makes a very good chatter bait rod as well.

For now

- upgrade the ugly stick and get a more sensitive rod for drop shots or Ned rig maybe a champion line.
And/OR

- get a mod fast action crank bait style rod for chatter bait or crank bait. Go with 7’6 or 7’3 so you can really bomb a bait far. Maybe Champ 735 CB glass or similar fury rod. I prefer a 6:1 speed on cranking from bank.

For Later.

If you’re in Texas

a frog rod/punching rod could be fun

at least 7 ft or longer xtra heavy fast with a 8:1 speed reel. Curados are good bets.

Thanks RW.  I read your extensive thread also.

All,

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply.  It is much appreciated.  I have a good path forward now to spend money. ?

I will probably pick up a Curado DC in 7.3 ratio and move the 6.X ratio Curado to the crank rod.

Critique my setups

You are a limp, worthless, lazy rod who will never amount to anything. You and your entitled selfish reel friend are wasting your lives and don't appreciate the sacrifices we have endured for you. Grow up already and do something with your life!

The way I see it is that if I don't already know what I need next, then I probably don't need anything yet.

If I don't like a set up I have, I would replace it. I might be looking to upgrade a rig or I might have bought a rig for a particular application and it didn't quite work out and need to try something else. I might need a new rig to try a new technique. I might need to duplicate a set-up I already have so I don't have to retie to throw a second chance lure on a missed short bite. I might even just see something that I want for no good reason. But in any case I already know what I want.

I guess I don't really understand your question. Why do you want a new rig if you don't know what you want?

Both are good ideas. The other thing that is missing is a true heavy rod. The Dobyns 705C or 735C (Mag Heavy) rods across most of their lines are pretty solid multi-purpose heavy rods.

That said, from the shore it's not as common that I need heavy rods as well at last in lakes I fish.

It doesn't matter what somebody thinks of your fishing gear what matters most is that you are having fun catching lots of fish.
