Fishbone Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 I have a new Yamaha 50hp on a 17 1/2ft G3 boat. I would like to convert the engine to a jet for river fishing. How costly would that be, or would it be best to just buy another engine? Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted November 30, 2009 Super User Posted November 30, 2009 Was reading about this on another site last week and they stated that the conversion would run 1,500-2,000. I'm sure this was one man's quote, so check around and price from several places. Remember this though, cheaper may not be better, so do your homework well. Good luck, Jack Quote
acar555 Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Also keep in mind that a jet drive produces about 70% of the thurst a prop will. So your 50 hp will be like you downsized to a 35hp. Quote
simplejoe Posted November 30, 2009 Posted November 30, 2009 Two years ago I checked into it for a Johnson 88 and it was going to run me $2,300 to convert over. Quote
fishizzle Posted December 1, 2009 Posted December 1, 2009 wouldn't it be cool if you could just replace the lower end and put on a jet drive on for a day then just switch back Quote
DawsonH Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 The manufactures website suggests that you can switch back and forth at will. If you can find someone that will just sell you the unit it will not be as expensive for you to install it yourself, should not be much to it really. Quote
mikesjet Posted December 2, 2009 Posted December 2, 2009 You can buy just a lower unit. It is suggested that you buy water pump and drive shaft for each, then it is just a matter of unbolting one and installing the other. There is, if I remember correctly about mine, 12 bolts and nuts that will remove the lower jet drive. I had mine apart last year to replace water pump. Also, make sure that at least once a year you remove the jet impeller and sharpen the leading edges. Their website has the instructions on how to do it. Huge difference in performance if you let them get blunted. If there isn't a dealer close to you they will sell direct. They are very good people to deal with. I have called and ordered parts from them without trouble. By the way all of the lower jet drives on outboards are made by Outboard Jet of california. Quote
