digitalvoid Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Got my rod and reel all setup. Used 8lb mono backing, 20lb hi-vis braid main line, and 8lb flouro leader. The mono and flouro line are the same diameters .235 and the braid is .23 I noticed that the braid to flouro knot catches a little in the tip. I used a uni to uni connection knot and it looks alright. I'm wondering if I need to do less wraps with the braid or maybe try a different knot. I tried the Alberto or maybe it was the Albright, but I couldn't seem to get that right. Thanks and a good one! Pete Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted May 27, 2021 Super User Posted May 27, 2021 For me, it's all about keeping those tags neat. I use alberto, but I imagine the same is true for any leader knot. Quote

I think for me the issue was not being able to keep the wrapped line all nice and tight to make it look like a coil. 9 minutes ago, J Francho said: Yep, it does that. I figured instead of doing straight braid or flouro, I could use one spool on line to setup two reels I also suppose it could be the quality of the braid and fluoro. I'm using Yo-Zuri Super Braid and Seagur(red label). Quote
huZZah Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 I have 20lb Yozuri braid to 12lb floro and my Alberto only gets snagged when I roll the rod over to get goop off a hook. 7 wraps up and 7 down in the knot. Goes through eyes fine. It’s my shaky head/light jig rig. If I were doing anything with moving baits I’d go straight braid. Quote
galyonj Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Try an FG knot. I resisted for a long time because I didn't wanna learn a complicated leader knot, but it's my favorite now. I have a couple rods with micro guides, and it doesn't even give them any trouble. 1 Quote
Konajon Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 Double uni is not the best option if you are putting it through the guides, as others have said try the fg. Quote
Super User Solution MN Fisher Posted May 27, 2021 Super User Solution Posted May 27, 2021 I initially did the double-uni for braid-to-leader, but as said it's not the best. I've moved to the FG, and it's not as hard as it may look. Just have to have the right instructions...this is the method I use now and I get consistently tight, thin, strong knots. 1 Quote
Super User ATA Posted May 28, 2021 Super User Posted May 28, 2021 If you do FG knot and end it with Rizzoto and I assure you that is the best thing to do. Quote
redux Posted May 28, 2021 Posted May 28, 2021 FG for sure. It is small and strong. Kind of a pain to learn, but it is worth the time. I use 40# PP braid on most of my baitcasters with flouro leaders anywhere from 15# to 25#. I have a few with 60# and sometimes tie on a 25# leader, but usually just run straight braid on those. My spin rods are 15# and 20# braid and I use 15# Yo-Zuri Hybrid or 15# flouro. The knot is completely solid. Some of my rods have a rod-length leader while others have double that. A few have 30+ yard leaders because of the baits I am throwing. One thing to remember is the flouro can hinge a bit at the base of the flouro where it meets the braid. If you run that line for awhile it can get weak and break just after the knot. Quote
txchaser Posted May 28, 2021 Posted May 28, 2021 On of my rods is 50lb braid to 20lb flouro leader on semi-micro guides, works great with the FG knot. It's really not very complicated to tie, it's just a bit tedious until you get comfortable with the little nuances like making two half-hitches very tight before you set the knot. It's worth learning though if you are going to use a leader - the difference in break strength is significant. By the way, don't put the braid in your mouth... just tie it to your belt loop or a buttonhole on your shirt. Too hard to see when it's right by your face. Otherwise just get used to the noise and don't worry about the uni knot banging around... although if you want a simple knot a six-turn surgeon might do better for you - easy to tie and strong. Quote
