Dy1an79ou Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 So on a baitcaster I am using, I am using it for light lures so 1/16 - 1/2 oz; with a 6’10 Medium Rod. But what I am wondering is will a 30lb Braid such as Sufix 832 Superline, cast Farther than an 8 lb mono or Fluoro line like a Seaguar InvizX with a 1/16 oz lure? Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted May 25, 2021 Super User Posted May 25, 2021 Yea, sure, maybe, no, not really, who knows? So many variables at play, it's impossible to know. How much farther are you wanting to throw it? Why? How much experience do you have? The list goes on. Quote
Junger Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 You would think the braid would right? Well, just a few weeks ago I had an 1/8oz inline spinner for the shad run here and I was casting it further with 8lb Yo-Zuri hybrid vs 20lb J-braid by about 10 yards on the same rod/reel. I wasn't getting deep enough so I figured switching from braid would get me down a little, so I spooled on the YHB. The braid should be lighter, and possibly have less drag, but it wasn't getting the same distance as the copoly YHB. So I guess, the only way is to find out for yourself. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted May 25, 2021 Super User Posted May 25, 2021 Unlike with spinning, I don't find major differences with casting distance between braid and mono with BCs. The difference will be magnified with the size of the lure. smaller lures favor mono, larger ones braid, all else being equal. 1/16-1/2 is too wide a lure weight range for one outfit IMNSHO. 1 Quote
michaelb Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 I don't know about casting differences, it may depend on the line and your setup and technique. But I do know that after a long far cast, if you get hit on the drop, your hookset will be much better with the braid than 8 lb mono. Quote
Dy1an79ou Posted May 26, 2021 Author Posted May 26, 2021 I meant to say 1/8 or 1/4 to 1/2 but however just as a general question can 20 or 30 lb braid cast farther than an 12 lb Fluoro for those set weights of lures on a baitcaster with the rod lit capacity at 1/8-1/2? Quote
Hulkster Posted May 26, 2021 Posted May 26, 2021 braid may be small diameter but it has more friction as it passes through the guide rings than mono does. probably why it may not cast as far. 1 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 26, 2021 Super User Posted May 26, 2021 About the same to me. But I only have one combo rigged with straight mono anymore. That's my spinner/buzzbait combo. My spinning combos are both rigged with 20# braid and I use a mono leader as needed. My jig and topwaters/cranks rods have 30# braid. I use a mono leader on the latter. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 26, 2021 Super User Posted May 26, 2021 1/16 oz is in the BFS weight. 1/8 oz minimum with your tackle. Line does cast lures rods do. If your rod doesn’t load up casting distance will be poor. If you try to to use more rod tip speed with a 1/16 lure with braid you will blow up the spooled braid into a nasty backlash. Tom Quote
craww Posted May 27, 2021 Posted May 27, 2021 If its raw distance comparing similar diameters, I prefer mono’s extra degree of forgiveness when I really push it to its limits on casting gear. Whether its tension of the braid clinging against itself or dig in Im not 100% aware of- I’ve learned pushing braid as hard as I can over the course of a day is usually more trouble than its worth slinging topwaters max distance. Super User dodgeguy Posted May 27, 2021 Super User Posted May 27, 2021 To small a diameter braid will dig on a baitcaster. 50 lb minimum in my opinion. It doesn't dig so even with light lures it casts far.if you are a guy who is worried about line visibility throw a leader on it. Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted May 27, 2021 Super User Posted May 27, 2021 Well a 30lb braid that runs on the thin side may be thinner than 8lb mono that runs fat, or the other way around which would have a huge effect. If the diameter is equal, the braid is more limp so in theory it could cast further, but it's possible that you would not be able to cast it further without getting an overrun especially with a light lure. There are so many factors in play. IMO if you need to ask the question, then it shouldn't be a deciding factor. This is one of those things you should just try for yourself and see what you think.
