Hey everyone.   Looking for ideas for a good spinning combo for the wife without breaking the bank.  Drawing a blank here since most of my combos are baitcasting and very very very few spinning set ups.

Looking for a good all around combo for bass and panfish.   Was thinking either a ML or M.

any and all help is appreciated and will be better than her broken kids rod from years ago.  Shes just getting back into fishing so I want to make this good and fun!

thanks everyone!

Breaking the bank depends on your financial situation.

$200 would get you a Dobyns Fury 703SF with either a Pflueger President XT-30, Diawa Legalis LT-2500 or Shimano Sedona FI-2500

Okuma Safina Pro combo. M/F.  Around $50

Berkley Lightning Rod spinning combo.  L, ML and M. Around $60

Pflueger has several President combos. I haven't seen them,  but I've heard some good things about them.  List is $80. See whether you can find them on sale.

Both Quantum and Lew's used to have big-box-store sale combos that were discounted severely. I have no idea whether they still have those. I have the Quantum; the rod is junk but the reel is actually fairly good. I paid $25 several years ago on a blowout sale.

   Good luck!      jj

I'd opt for ML.  ML is a bit wimpy for most bass presentations, but a bit stiff for panfish.  So it sits right in the middle.  Not ideal for either, but it's probably your best compromise.

As for rod and reel, it depends on your budget.  But I'd consider the BPS Pro Qualifier 2 combo.  It's a pretty good rod, a usable reel, and the price isn't too crazy.  Plus, BPS is pretty good about accepting returns on broken rods and reels from their own line, so if you have one local that you can visit, that's a nice bit of insurance.

Can’t get Dobyns in Canada or I’d check out the Fury for sure.   Thanks for the suggestions.  The Legalis was considered as well.  ??.    I don’t use my tatula LT so I’ll end up giving that to the wife.  So just hunting down a rod now.

as for budget I was looking around $100-150 for rod.    I was checking out the new Abu Veritas PLX rods in ML.  Any thoughts on those?

It all depends on your budget.

If you had to do it with one combo, I'd 100% go with a ML. The Pro Qualifier 2 combo that @Bankc recommended would do a pretty great job at straddling that fence.

However, let me pitch you this:

If you have spinning combos for bass, I bet you don't use them super often. Let her use one of those, and get her a dedicated panfish setup.

A 6' Okuma Celilo is like $25 or something, and it'd be a good rod at double the price. Get her a 1000-size reel in the $50 range, spool it with 4lb YZH, and she'll wear the panfish plum out*.

*Spend some of what's left out of your budget on itty bitty hair jigs and fun panfish lures, and put the rest into the boat's gas tank.

No experience with Abu rods - I run Diawa, Dobyns, and Okuma.

Maybe a Diawa Tatula 7'1" ML/F - I don't have any Tatulas but I've heard good things about them.

Great advice!

I have this same rod for trout and panfish and I love it. I have a $30 Shimano Sienna which works fine, but if I had to do again I would probably buy a $50 Daiwa Revros.

good idea.   She was using my st croix panfish rod but I accidentally snapped the tip.  So waiting on st croix to process my warranty for a replacement.  They told me it’ll take 2 weeks to start my claim.  ??‍♂️

I have a spare ultralight reel kicking around as well so that’s a good idea.  I never thought of picking up an Okuma Celilo.   I’ll go that route.

as for a bass spinning rod then, should I go M as a good all around spinning rod?

Yeah, that'd do just fine.

x3 on the Celilo Ultralight. I have it in 7'0 Light action for trout and panfish, and with my 1000 size Sienna it works great!

I ended up giving her my tatula LT 2500 reel.   I hated that reel on my MH evergreen combat stick.   Tried it on a 6’4 M Veritas and hated it on there.   I ended up picking up a 7’ ML Veritas PLX spinning rod and it was a hit.  Wife loves it. Had fun fishing it and man that tatula LT is a fantastic reel.   I am no longer a hater of it.. I am now a believer.   Guess it just takes the right rod to shine.

now I’ll have to get her a MH rod and reel either spinning or casting to get into the heavier stuff.   ?

the bait monkey never stops :)

Been thinking about getting that one too. What lures do you fish with the 7' light Celilo? The lure rating is 3/16 - 5/8.

If I were you I would pick up the ultralight, and I can cast these small 1/32-1/8 panfish jigs pretty far for the lure rating. I can cast X-Raps for Sauger(Which I caught my first one one), and I can handle Brown Trout over a pound. It is an amazing pole for so little money, so I would pick it up!

I already have the 6 UL Was wondering about the 7’ Light.

The 7'0 light would be a little bit bigger and stiffer than the UL, but it works great! Good sensitivity, enough backbone to pull in the occasional big trout, I've flipped a pound and a half bullhead over a dock without it breaking although I was rushing it so I wouldn't try it, and it is light-weight. It's good, and I highly recommend it.
