Super User Darth-Baiter Posted May 24, 2021 Super User Posted May 24, 2021 Like people, we cant all be good looking. you ever catch a bass that is odd? I love them all but yesterday was the first time i got a humpback. He fought me hard. Really put his back into it. Quick pic and I slipped him back into the lake. Not sure I got the full hump in pic. Neat fish!! 4 1 Quote

Captain Phil Posted May 24, 2021 Posted May 24, 2021 Years ago we used to think bass like this had been injured. A fisheries biologist told us it was a genetic bass deformity. 2 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 24, 2021 Super User Posted May 24, 2021 I caught a bass while fishing with a guide in FL twice about an hour apart. It was clearly the same bass because it looked like a question mark. I told the guide he should keep that one because it was obviously trying to commit suicide. 2 Quote
CrankFate Posted May 24, 2021 Posted May 24, 2021 I caught one with a destroyed eye last week. I think that comes from scraping the bottom when caught in shallow water. Because the shallow water fish often have bad fresh scrapes on them, compared to deeper water fish. Quote

Super User gim Posted May 25, 2021 Super User Posted May 25, 2021 I caught a largemouth bass last July with a blueish-gray color. It seemed healthy and I released it. I emailed the local fisheries office and a biologist responded. He said it was simply a genetic alteration and he had also seen it in walleye, northern pike, and crappie on rare occasion but this was the first bass he had seen with it. 2 Quote
Super User geo g Posted May 26, 2021 Super User Posted May 26, 2021 I caught a bass a few years ago with the entire gill plate on one side was torn at the base and hanging lose. It was a terrible injury that had healed, and the bass seemed in good shape and ready to eat again. It was released in good shape and swam off strong. This was clearly an old injury. These creatures live in a dangerous world, and are tougher than many of us believe. Quote
