Super User Mobasser Posted May 22, 2021 Super User Posted May 22, 2021 During the peak of the Covid crisis, our Academy Sporting goods store, like many other tackle stores had basically no tackle. I remember stopping once over the winter, and counted roughly ten bags of soft plastic baits, and little of everything else. I'm happy to report that I stopped by there today, and the tackle was very well stocked up. The soft plastics isle was full, as were the hardbaits. Good selection of lines of all types, as well as hooks, weights, and jigheads of various sizes and brands. Only one area was a little understocked- the rods and some reels. A guy told me they expected a big shipment in early next week. I've come to like Academy over the last three years. Good brands here, and you can catch some great sales at certain times of the year. We were all having a hard time finding fishing tackle for a while. I saw post here on BR about tackle shortages all over the country. So, I'm happy to report, at least here in North Central Mo, our Academy is alive and well. 6 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted May 22, 2021 Super User Posted May 22, 2021 The two by me (The Woodlands and Humble) in Texas are also well-stocked. Baits, tackle, rods, reels, etc. Probably two well. And BM knows this! Quote
David Austin Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 I went by the one here a couple of days ago and they were out of a ton of stuff. Quote
greentrout Posted May 22, 2021 Posted May 22, 2021 My Academy is well stocked and making sales ... good to see ... the covid 19 had me use their online offerings more than I ever thought I would ... thumbs up ... good fishing ... https://www.academy.com/discount 1 Quote

Super User BrianMDTX Posted May 24, 2021 Super User Posted May 24, 2021 Both are stocked with Zoom baits. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted May 24, 2021 Global Moderator Posted May 24, 2021 Academy is the greatest. Ours never missed a beat 2 Quote
Super User ChrisD46 Posted May 25, 2021 Super User Posted May 25, 2021 *I notice that many fishing products which used to be readily stocked by Academy are now "on line only" status ... These are popular lures and soft plastics as well ... Not sure of the reason ? Quote
NavyVet1204 Posted May 25, 2021 Posted May 25, 2021 The academy we frequent 20 miles from home is pretty good about keeping the shelves and peg hooks full. 1 Quote
Holetail Posted June 1, 2021 Posted June 1, 2021 Our store has been hit or miss on tackle but they seem to still be crazy busy since we are a tourist town and people are finally able to get to the beach vacations they missed last year. I have to give Academy props for their online to store ordering as well. Ordered two reels and a rod which arrived packaged really well and in less than 5 days from ordering. They have become my go to even with an SW next door 1 Quote

Super User Catt Posted June 2, 2021 Super User Posted June 2, 2021 Sadly ours is not ? But it never had a well stocked fishing department. The store has a lock on supplying team sports to all the area public schools. 1 Quote
fin Posted June 2, 2021 Posted June 2, 2021 I love Academy, but I wish they would have left their web site alone. It worked fine years ago, then they changed it, and now they've changed it again. I went to look at their weekly ad the other day, and it asked me to enter my password. Never did get to see the ad. Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted June 4, 2021 Super User Posted June 4, 2021 I like Academy best for quality All Star Rods or their H2O brand close outs. They must be selling too well, because the last few times I've been to Academy, there haven't been any close outs. This is disappointing to me. I wish the tackle department buyers would over order, so that a few decent fishing rod close outs would trickle down to me. Note to Academy tackle department buyers who might be reading this: Generally when I pick up a close out rod or 2, I will buy some other stuff at the same time, so I ain't just a close out cherry picker, but that is what gets me in the door - that and knocking 50% off your spf 50 fishing shirts. They make great summer lawn mowing shirts. Quote
HoosierFisher Posted June 10, 2021 Posted June 10, 2021 Just left our local Academy. Lot of empty hooks in the fishing department, especially the plastics. Fortunately I have enough plastics to last a long time. I was looking at wacky hooks and they didn't have much aside from the weedless VMC hooks that i've found that I don't really like. Also didn't have any o rings from what I could tell. I did get a clamp on umbrella for my kayak seat for $6. 1 Quote
Luke Barnes Posted June 10, 2021 Posted June 10, 2021 Went to one of my local Academy stores yesterday and the plastics were pi kes through and they cut them down to one aisle for every type of soft plastic. So its packed full of pegs and half empty. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted June 11, 2021 Super User Posted June 11, 2021 I remember going in to one of the Academy's near me one day last year and the shelves were completely bare. I mean nothing was left. Then I went to another, smaller Academy, and they had a decent selection of stuff. Probably 80% of usual. But since this winter, they've both been close to fully stocked. There will be the individual this or that that's out of stock, but for the most part, it's been business as usual. Same with the Bass Pro. Dick's, however, removed all of their fishing gear from all of their stores near me. They did this about six months before the pandemic. 1 Quote
Crankin4Bass Posted June 11, 2021 Posted June 11, 2021 I don't have any Academy stores near me and have only been while traveling. Do they still have rods from Shimano, St. Croix and other big brands in store or are they moving to store brands like BPS has? Quote

My store carries the 2 above and G Loomis rotating some other big brands in from time to time. They are not the complete lines but usually a couple of each brand. There is no doubt Academy, imho, is putting more and more emphasis on its H20 Xpress brand in rods and reels. I believe the rods are made by All Star and have a strong following in my neck of the woods ... Good fishing ... 1 1 Quote
