My fishing  shop is picked clean.  I was hoping for 14lb braid. Hell maybe even 10.  All sold out, so I filled it with high-vis 20.  I just tied on my 10lb leader and I was surprised the knot is fatter.   The practice plug flys fine.

too heavy?   Usual finesse shenanigans.  Drop shot, etc.   man it feels thick.  My old rig is rocking 10lb, faded yellow braid.  On the right side. A splice knot is easy with the thicker line.  :)

thoughts?

I wouldnt use 20#, 10 max but your location and size fish you might hook into would be different from me. 10# braid will hold a knot to 15 pounds or so, well except weak kanzen and smackdown if those lines 20# would be needed to match other 10# rated braids.. So my vote is OVERKILL.

I hemmed and hawed between 10# and 20# - put the 10# on, but I could just as easily gone with the 20#...I have both in hi-vis.

Also remember that good 20# braids (Power Pro, Sufix 832, Seaguar Smackdown, etc) are about the same diameter as 6# mono or 8# FC - so it's not like the diameter is going to be huge or anything.

I have 20lb Sufix 832 on my Revros LT2500. No issues whatsoever.

I'm having a harder time with the 10# leader than the 20# main line.  My dropshotting happens on 6# and tubes are on 8#.

True. I usually use all 8#.  Trying to burn up my final stash of 10.  Figured Clearlake weeds; the 10 might be good insurance.

8 & 10 lb main line for my spinning rigs. Braid over 10 lb, I'll be using a baitcaster.

In my experience, the lighter the braid the more chance for wind knots.

I personally use 15 or 20 pound power pro on my spinning reels. Always with a fluoro or mono leader. anything less than that gives me issues.

Same line, same experience.

thanks.  I am strung up with Power-pro.

I'll go and get a bass on it for a more in depth idea on what I like and dont like.   right now, it's all from the hip.   not like my shop had any other options.  20lb was the lightest braid they had.   I do get wind knots on the light stuff.  never realized that was a thing.

maybe 15lb is the middle ground.  fun learning and advancing my techniques nevertheless.

I have 20lb suffix 832 braid to a 6lb leader. Same diameter and haven't had a wind know in a year and a half so far. I did get wind knots with 10lb braid, but in a different reel so it's probably not a fair comparison.

I would say 10-20lb braid is fine on a spinning reel. I have an extra spool of 10lb suffix to try out but no bug need to change it out.

I'm running 10# 832 with 6# FC on my President-25/FR702SF...haven't had a wind knot yet, but I'm not trying to toss it far.

I would think that 20lb braid would be fine, especially with a mono/flouro leader. It seems that 20# still has enough line capacity but would also reduce wind knots if you casted very far. I use 20# yellow braid with 12# leader for my all-purpose spinning setup and it catches fish! It may be different in California, but with a long enough leader, I would think you should be fine.

If you have the capacity you need and will be using your normal leader regardless and it goes thru the guides fine .......what does it matter?  For the same thread count braid I look at the actual diameter not the supposed rating.  The actual breaking strength I think much more closely follows actual diameter for a given strand count.

So many braids are way over stated  lb test.  My 15lb PPSS8v2 was closer to 30lb break my 30lb was right at 50lb.  I see lb ratings as marketing used two ways.  Either how much stronger at the cost of diameter or the flip how small the diameter for the rating but it's in ratio that much lower in actual strength.   Would sure be nice if labeled break lb was within a couple % of actual and stated diameter was within a few % of stated.  Would be nice to have reporting spec standards in the fishing industry.

+1 ... Little if any wind knot loops at the end of my rod with #20 lb. Power Pro on a spinning reel . Use mono backing and fill the reel up at least half way then connect braid with double uni knot and spool the braid TIGHT adding pressure with the fingers and a rag . I think #15 lb. braid would be a nice happy medium but #20 lb. braid + leader doesn't make me feel like I am at a disadvantage for typical casting distances for bass .

I have a Vanford 2500 spooled with 20 lb. Power Pro + 8# leader on a ML and I don't feel like I'm getting the distance I should. I think I need to bump down to 15# & 6# leader.

How much backing are you guys using under the braid? I didn't use very much it all.

My President-25 is spooled with 10# 832/6# InvizX leader - about 70yds of the braid and the rest is 6# mono backing.

I'm getting good distance - course I'm not shooting for the moon either - and haven't had a wind-knot yet.
