Just got the call.  Promotion interview on Monday.  My first thought wasn’t “hmmm. I should start studying ASAP”

it was, “ dang,   I’m fishing Clearlake Sunday!”

haha. I’ll probably cut my trip short.  Fishing has distorted my outlook of life a little bit. No doubt.

LOL. I know the feeling.

As a junior Seaman, I was stationed aboard a Spruance class destroyer, which I selected because the fantail was the best suited for fishing. We bottom fished at anchor and trolled when the conditions allowed. The catching was usually not great, but we made the best of it.

We were doing boxes somewhere of the coast of the Carolinas at perfect trolling speed, and we were hooking more fish than usual, and actually landing some. It got better and better, and about an hour into it GQ gets called away for a main space class Bravo fire drill, well, let's just say I was a bit slow getting on station, and who walks by a deck above but the Skipper.

My Chief asks me after we secured from the drill "Where you fishing during GQ?" I sheepishly said yeah, That was a close call. Got off with a stern talking and a little EMI. The XO liked my answer when he asked "What were you thinking?" I said "It was awesome real fishing and a pretend fire. When we have a real fire, I'll be the first guy through the door, and they'll have to carry me out on my shield if necessary Sir".

No bro, work is distorting your outlook on life, and fishing!

At 53, I am of the mindset that work will have to be scheduled around my fishing and life, and I will find work/a job that will allow me to pretty much do that.

You only live once. Doing my best to make the above come true.

I’ve always been that family and job are my top priority.

I can’t kick about my success fishing and hunting over the years. But I will say that I’ve let work take president over things I wanted to do or were planed to to. Big mistakes in the long run. Would not suggest anyone do it. It for the most part did not amount to squat. A regret most times.

Now that I’m almost done working (couple years) I dog off a lot to get my fish time in the last couple of years. I would not think of it before. This spring at least once a week I showed up late (let them know I was gonna be late), trout fishing at sun up till a couple of hours. Felt NO remorse or what anyone thought or cared. More of it is coming.

But my kids are grown, through school, have kids of their own. I can think differently about it nowadays.

I am at the point in my life where I figure I spent a large enough portion of my life on my job as it is and it really gets in the way of going fishing. So if you have the chance to go fishing, go for it lol

Clear Lake should clearly take priority over a interview for a promotion.

Your doing fine where your at.

Call in sick and spend a couple more days fishing.

Hear you there. Between work, grad school, children and our house my plate is full yet i keep finding myself putting off assignments and sneaking to the river when i should be doing something around the house. Luckily my 5 yr old son loves fishing so I can use that as an excuse and we have been going 2-3 times a week for an hour or two.

Unbelievable!  I got the position.!!

im looking forward to furthering my career, but this  will put a slight hiccup in my fishing agenda. I’ll manage.   Onward and forward.  Never stall, or go backwards:)

At 6 days short of 59, and 16 days short of two years retired...I can honestly report that I made the right decision two years ago.

I loved what I did for work, and still keep one toe in that water, for fun, but I do not miss the daily grind, the constant pressure, or the countless, endless challenges.

Not having to decide what I'm gonna do on a given day until I get up in the morning is the cat's ass, and I've got zero regrets.
