Guys I just want to share brand my new Penn Senator 14/0 reel for my monster shark fishing. I am very exited about this beast. Going to make more updates as I spool it and pair it with rod.

Nice reel, mostly bullet proof.

2 nautical miles of 130 lb braid otta do it.

I used to use a 10/0.

Still have in fact.

Braid wasn't invented yet, so I went with 80 lb Dacon and a big mono topshot.  Got spooled a few times.

Had to fight them standing and we were always anchored.

Good Times.

That is a nice reel. I have Penn Senators that are older than myself and have caught lots of sharks on them. What species of sharks will you be fishing for?

Thresher sharks look like a hard fighting species of shark. I know California has a healthy population of great white sharks, some of them get so big that they cannot be landed with even the strongest of fishing reels. Florida also has great white sharks but they are much more rare compared to California. We do have hammers, bulls, tigers, lemons, and several other species that grow large and can be caught from the shore.

I have freedived next to big sharks and it is something I enjoy doing since they are impressive and beautiful animals. They are not the monsters some people think they are. You will be surprised how many sharks swim in the beach in South Florida right next to people. They can sense fear so as long as you are not afraid of them and remain calm you should be ok. If this is too much for you then maybe diving with sharks and shark fishing is not the hobby for you, maybe it would be best for you to stick to bass fishing. lol

Make sure to post the pics of the giants you catch, I want to shark fish so bad! The only "sharks" I have ever caught so far are just dog sharks which are nothing compared to big sharks.

Thats the plan, but it is long way to go, I just found out the rod I have doesn't fit the 14/0 , Because the reel seat need to be very big.

Guys got a bad news, Today in shop when spooling, The reel stop rotating, it is lock. we dont know the issue, I am open to suggestions.

Start taking it apart.  If you get to the exposed bridge you should see the problem.  Don't force it to turn until you see the problem.

All Penn Senators are built the same from 1/0 to 14/0 ( roughly), so if you can fix a smaller one you can fix a larger version.

If you want to talk to the best shark reel assemblers go to AlanTani.com, Look for 'Sharkhunter'. He's the man.

Nice reel! I wish I could catch a shark. Only shark-like fish near me is the Lake Sturgeon, but it is illegal to hook them on purpose in all except for a select few bodies of water. A stingray is the closest that I've gotten to catching something that is related to a shark.

I grew up in Miami.  As a kid, my friends and I often fished in the ocean off the pier all night.  Our fathers would take turns driving us to the pier and picking us up the next morning.  We slept on the pier, waking up when we had a bite.  We caught big snook and tarpon along with buckets full of snapper and grouper.  There was a group of men who shark fished on the pier with us. They used big Penn Senators like this.   The pier manager would only allow them to fish for sharks on Wednesday nights as shark fishing takes up a lot of room.  One angler landed a 900 pound Tiger Shark fishing on that pier.  They landed it on the beach next to the pier and hoisted it into a truck.  The local paper printed a photo in the newspaper.

I fished offshore all over the world for many years, mostly for bill fish.  I have hooked many big sharks.  We cut them off because they weren't what we were fishing for.   You don't need a huge reel to catch big fish unless you are fishing from shore.   The weight of a reel like that is actually a handicap.  I have seen Marlin over 600 pounds caught on standup gear.  Someone I fished with for years caught a grander that way.   The biggest shark I ever caught myself was a hammerhead.   The dorsal fin looked 4 feet high.  It hit a live 5 pound jack I was slow trolling off Miami Beach.  I could have waved to the swimmers on the shore.

Yes I do stay at the beach, I bought few at the pier but the issue in pier is they will wrapped around and cut off, specially the bigger ones, Iland 4 feet shark from pier and load it up by crab net and some rope, it was heavyyyy XXXXXH, I almost wanted to let go and I am big guy.

so I decided to go to the beach so I can pull them all the way.

I have ordered RC boat already to send the chunk out 300 yards with no problem.

The pier where we fished was next to a major inlet.   The shark fisherman would have their baits carried out in small boats so it would sit near the current.  The reason for the big reels was line capacity.  These guys all looked like body builders.  Some of the fights would last for hours.  There were some surfers who swam near this pier during the day.  Lots of bathers too.  When the water was clear you could see big sharks swimming along the pier looking for a meal.  When you reel up half a 100 pound tarpon, you don't want to get in the water.

Update:

As I mention my reel was in Penn west cost service center, They opened my baby up and it was very simple Grease on bridge on main shaft missing, or better to say it was dry, So they greased and lube everything and close it back. It is very smooth  and working very nice.

We end up spooling 2400 yards of 130lb test solid diamond braid and 400 yards of 130lb test Suffix highviz mono.

ill update about the rod also.

Looks like you could lift an engine block with that thing!

I caught some some small sand sharks in Maryland many years ago, but no big boys like makos, bulls or threshers. That’s a whole ‘nother animal.

2400 yards of braid. Wow. Need a 2nd mortgage for that! ?

I'd go with 200 lb braid, small nicks or rubbing will weaken braid. If you go with hollow braid, you can forgo the knot. We use 50 Wide Tiagras mostly. Sadly, sharking has not been great on this coast for a while. I like a heavy mono leader (400-600 lb) and short #19 single wire with a smallish hook.  Good luck out there.
