Stocked Trout are my nemesis. I didn’t buy the stamp this year just because I hate them so much

Why's that? Because they attract annoying googans? Almost every lake in Washington state has stocked trout or salmon.

Once you figure them out you will see how fun they are!

I used to catch them a lot about 10 years ago. I’ve talked so bad about them, they no longer bite

I'd've thought your hate for the species has to do with the fact that you spend your weekends putting worms on the hook for yankees so they can catch them.

I hate/struggle at the large rocky reservoirs near me, Rocky Gorge and Tridelphia in MD.  Most of my bass fishing is in shallow, murky ponds/marshes, so deep, rocky spots are really hard for me to adapt to.

Shakey head, flick shake, finesse jigs with double tail grubs.

Lake Casitas has earned the reputation as the Dead Sea.

Casitas can be outstanding for 20 minutes then nothing. On a good day you get 2 bite cycles on most days none. Casitas is a very good night lake but rarely opened to night fishing.

I love and hate this lake, it’s like no other lake I have ever fished and it was my home lake since ‘58.

Stocked trout for sure, but salmon on west side lakes? Tell me! I’m down, lol. Nice to see a fellow Washingtonian here.

@TnRiver46: We can help you get into those trout. ?

Nope. I have not one but two nemesis lakes. Both are known for big mama bass. One is the hallowed lake Fenwick rods is named for. I’ve seen big bass caught in it that’s been posted even on you tube and I can’t buy a strike. Never caught a fish from it. The other I’ve caught other species but never a bass. Going on 17 years, lol. Granted I might visit both lakes maybe 5 times per season if at all, not the 17 year drought is a bit inflated. It still hurts, lol.

I already targeted that the non fenwick lake once and nothing. I go to another lake ten minutes away and catch two bass within 10 minutes. Come on, man ???

It was my understanding that stocked trout are the power-food bars of big bass.  bass love eating the stocked trout, and grow gigantic because of them.  no?

Mashpee-Wakeby on Cape Cod.  I've seen folks catch 4+ pound SMB, but it escapes me almost completely.  Sure has my number.

I believe so, I believe especially in CA. Perhaps here too in WA state but our winter slow their growth and trout anglers here are very capable of nearly catching all of the stocked trout by end of summer.

The curse of the Red River in fargo nd for me has been broken, repeat broken. I changed my fishing style on the red today, no more lures just lazy fishing with a 1/2 oz black and orange round head jig with a 3 inch gulp minnow dunked in spike it yellow garlic juice also using a fixed bobber 4 feet up from jig and 80lb fluoro leader to protect from the rocks and the pike.

I sat in my chair with my phone in my pocket wearing earbuds listening to some lawyer talk show called handel on the law. I casted about 25 yards into the fast current and my bobber would float 20 yards to the left and then the eddy current would bring it 20 yards to the right and then a few minutes later it would end up 5 feet in front of me.

I did this repeatedly and was just chillin and almost fell asleep. I then needed to adjust my phone so as i grabbed phone out of my pocket and was now looking for a new podcast to listen to.

My pole being clamped tight between my knees bent and the line was coming off the spool as i had the drag set very light so i could mess with phone and now i had phone, ear buds cord and rod all in my right had and didnt know what to do first so i started reeling in but drag was light so had to adjust drag then put phone in pocket, started reeling in again.

I landed a channel catfish. First fish i caught in the red since 1978 when i was in high school. No snags, no pressure, no worries and i caught a fish and gave it away to a fellow whom was fishing for catfish to eat. First pic is where i was fishing just below the dam, 2nd pic fish, and 3rd pic is where i caught it 5 feet from the concrete waterline.

Works pretty good for growing gigantic mountain smallmouth too (i.e. watauga and south holston lake). Except here you can legally use the trout as bait, catch your own or buy a dozen. Smallies LOVE them

Mine is Chickamauga.

I've been going several times a year for about 10 years now looking for something over 7

I've broken off half a dozen that would have been close if not over

I broke a rod at the boat and had a handle on the net snap on 2 other fish

During this same time I have been in the boat when 4 fish over 10 have been caught

I've got a pretty good nemesis

I do, and I hate it.  Especially since my driveway to the ramp is about a ten minute drive.

Yes, there is a pond here, that is bigger than most, that allegedly contains bass that are supposedly big. I have not caught one there in about 25 years, because an accident poisoned all the fish, causing them to all die. They were restocked some time around then. It became overrun with bullheads and large carp.  I think local carp fishermen introduced the carp. Which run very big for the area. I figured the bass would be living off the tiny cats and tried to match the hatch. Didn’t work. Nothing worked. I saw schools of shiners. If they are eating live, wild shiners, I’ll never catch them. I will try again soon. I also saw 2 tremendous arrowanas in there last spring, over 2 feet long. Sitting on the surface along the shrubbery line. I doubt they lasted over winter, but it was still crazy to see. It’s also the only place around here that is full of clams, which I read are a terrible invasive species. No idea how they got there.

Near me I would say Rupert lake, I fished it quite a bit and didn’t ever catch anything till last year, although that lake is what started my obsession with mega bass jerk baits lol.

My home lake, Happy Holler, in NOWEMO is my white whale but that is why, year after year, an 80 acre lake can keep my attention and keep me excited.  Most days, you will work for every fish you catch but it has it ALL so it keeps things interesting.  You want rip rap off a dam?  Got it.  You want shallow flats?  Got it.  Shallow points with sharp drop offs?  Yep.  Creek channels?  5 of them.  Standing timber, stumps and or laydowns?  Filled with them.  25' deep brush piles?  Of course!  Heavy frogging mats with plenty of shaded areas for the middle of the day summer frog bites?  Everywhere.  The first time I saw this little lake, my first thought was "Holy ****, look at this place!"  Now, 12 years later, when I get there, my first thought is always "Holy ****, look at this place.".  It is my paradise...BUT...it's not easy to fish.  There is SO much habitat that a lot of the areas that you KNOW should be holding bass simply aren't.  It has taken me a long time to figure out basic patterns on this lake to consistently catch fish.  I haven't been skunked in a long time but I have MANY days where I might average one fish per hour.  The bite can get tough enough to make things interesting and occasionally, the fishing God's will give me a fantastic day to keep me going.  I can't begin to guess how many people have asked me about Happy Holler and why I always go there because they can't buy a bite.  I just tell them that she's a hard mistress that demands attention and devotion.  If you don't give her that, she'll turn on you.

Lake Pend Oreille.

Its massive. Its full of fish and its dangerous.

Twice this week I went out chasing smallies on blue skies and glassy water.

Small clouds get closer and boom. Literally within 3 minutes you are in 4-5 ft breakers and violent winds.

Both times this week I really was wondering if I was going to make it back to the launch. And BOTH times all my weather apps said I was good to go.

Yesterday I even had a rod blow off the deck while I was trying to stow em...

But the fishing is awesome.
