5/0 Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 Started experimenting with snaps (Owner Welded Quick Snaps) on plugs. I do remove the split rings. However with the Lucky Craft jerkbaits the line lie is recessed and the snap will not go through the line tie. With these baits can I leave the split ring on and connect the snap to it? I’m using the #1 , 33# snaps and hope they’re light enough not to affect the balance of the lure. Joe Quote
Nibbles Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 I've never removed the split rings on my LC Pointers and Flash Minnows. The bass and pike up here don't seem to mind. I use Owner snagless snaps. 1 1 Quote
QED Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 I've been using snaps forever, mostly using ultralight gear (number 0 and 00) for ages and they have not adversely affected my fishing. To the contrary, they permit rapid lure changes which is a huge plus. And for crankbaits w/o split rings, they permit freer lure movement. 1 Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 I've never removed a split ring from any bait. Maybe I've missed out on some fish, but I've caught plenty, too. 1 Quote
Happybeerbuzz Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 It is simple enough to try. If the action is not impaired, keep doing it. If it is impaired, start tying those lures directly again. 1 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 17, 2021 Super User Posted May 17, 2021 I've never removed the split ring. I've never noticed any reduction in the action of the bait. Quote
QED Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 I always remove split rings from a bait that I use snaps with. Zero upside in keeping them in that case. Quote

As a backseat it would allow me to use one rod over different applications by using the snap to change lures quickly. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 18, 2021 Super User Posted May 18, 2021 I just hook the snap onto whatever the lure has. The one lure I can think of that has a split ring is the lipless crank, or cranks in general and jerkbaits. It doesn't seem to make a bit of difference. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 18, 2021 Super User Posted May 18, 2021 Owner Hyper Weld size 1 snap should be able to replace a split ring on LC lures? Tom Quote
5/0 Posted May 18, 2021 Author Posted May 18, 2021 1 hour ago, WRB said: Owner Hyper Weld size 1 snap should be able to replace a split ring on LC lures? Tom I tried that Tom. With the recessed line tie, once I removed the split ring the snap would not go through the line tie due to the recess. That’s what prompted my question about the affect of leaving the split ring there and connecting the snap to it. Quote
Super User WRB Posted May 18, 2021 Super User Posted May 18, 2021 What lure? Just tie direct with a San Diego Jam knot. Use the lure weight to tie the knot. Tom Quote
