Some days they bite, some days they dont. But you see them leaping around to let you know they're there just to tease you on purpose I think. Spiteful fish they are - theyre kinda cute that way. Am I also the only one who finds their smell addictive? I wipe their slime on my pants so it sticks like perfume lol

I don't think that the bass scent is intrinsically pleasant but rather that it reminds one of good times which conditions one to find it pleasant.  Sort of like the smell of Hoppe's Number 9.

I’ll never figure out why guys like Hoppes so much. It’s my most commonly used but it stinks to me. But fish on the other hand thatsa some sweet smell.

To the op, yes, these fish are well aware of this game we play. We fake them out with artificial food, stick our thumb in their mouth, smile at them, take selfies with them then pitch them back into the drank. They know our game well. Sometimes they play along, sometimes they don’t.
And op, the secret is to grow a mustache or if one cannot be grown apply a peel n stick mustache, then you can rub that fish cologne closer to the olfactories!

Back a few years ago I caught a spotted Muskie. They are not common in the river I fish. That thing smelled like sulfur. But his skin pattern was pretty cool. Not real big. Close to 30”, size 8 or 9 Shad Rap. Not fishing for Muskies. Fish was not sick. Healthier than heck. All fight on 8 lb test.

I don’t mind the smell of bass. I also enjoy sardines but I do like a lil mustard on them. But I prefer my fried fish not so fishy.

If you want to talk about something nasty, catch you a rat snake about 5 feet long and let him wrap around your arm... he’ll start foaming and put off some stink that even @TnRiver46 would not approve of!!

LM are spiteful. They love to boil on natural bait all around the boat while ignoring my offerings ?

They are fish with brain the size of a pea. If bass are out smarting you what does that tell you!

I have never witnessed a bass hit a crank bait without an obvious look of ticked off on its face. So I assume that they aren’t biting them thinking they are food.

Bass rarely jump out of the water for no reason.

A lot of the bass I catch smell strongly like shad, which is not a good smell at all. I've never caught a bass and thought it was "cute", either.

Theyre smarter than we give them credit for. I think they are capable of learning (not to bite the same lure twice ??)

Gary Borger has the best talk on fish "smarts" - really, his talk is on stealth.

He said the guys who can claim to be fish psychologists note the smartest fish, carp, has an IQ of 12.

You're probably never out-smarted by a fish, and I wouldn't anthropormorphize spite or moods into their motivations.

His point about natural selection, brave and inquisitive fish become fodder.

Big fish aren't smart, big fish are cowards.

But I do remember one shut out December day on our trout tailwater.  Sitting on my tailgate, peeling my waders, there was a size 6 hex mayfly on my shirt.  He was laughing at me.
