BassSteve Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 This is for those unfortunate souls that have lost a reel/rod in the water , and not recovered it ?. Years ago, I once got very impatient with a bad birds nest and threw my rod/reel in the water lol. Who here has actually lost a reel and/or rod in the water and could not get it back? I am sorry for your loss. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted May 15, 2021 Super User Posted May 15, 2021 I see that happening every so often, but it's the $24.99-combo-discounted-to-$19.99 that get broke and then get thrown. jj Quote
BassSteve Posted May 15, 2021 Author Posted May 15, 2021 That would make more sense but I'm talking about people that were actually messing around with the rod and reel on the boat and actually fell in and they couldn't get it back Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted May 15, 2021 Super User Posted May 15, 2021 Jan 1 2021. I had to pee so I reached for my paddle to go to shore. In doing so , I punted (paddle knocked rod out of the dumb factory Hobie shallow rod holders)my spinning setup into 45 feet of dark cold water. Just out of reach. It sank as I watched helplessly. Crushed my spirit and basically started my new year with a black eye. I proceeded to complete the day with a skunk. went home, turned on my computer and ordered the exact same setup. Since then those factory rod holders are dead to me. Nothing goes into them ever. Well I stuff food bar wrappers into them to dump later. Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted May 15, 2021 Super User Posted May 15, 2021 Three months ago I donated a custom built Rainshadow Eternity, matched with a brand new Stella HGFL and spooled with Tatsu. The Pickwick fish gods grabbed it right out of the boat. As I watched it sink into the depths I considered jumping in after it, but I did not. 4 Quote

That’s as bad as the calais DC & St Croix legend extreme I lost to a bass that grabbed my soft plastic bait I left in the water at the side of the boat. The fishing gods at Stickmarsh laughed at me that day. Quote
CrankFate Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 Never. But I’ve seen several rods shoot into the water like a bullet over the years. 1 Quote
ghost123123 Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 July 5th, 2018 fishing on a local river for bass. Hands were sweating, had sunscreen on my hands and got a bite, set the hook. Fish pulled back, left hand slipped off the rod, leaving the right hand on the reel handle. Well, it didn’t take long for the right hand to slip off the reel handle. Fish pulls the rod over the side of the boat. Made two lunges at the rod as it became more submerged, made contact but couldn’t grasp any part of the rod. Watched an investment of over $300.00 swim away towards the bottom of the river. I want to believe it was a large fish responsible for my loss but I will never know. Used an underwater camera to try and find the pole, but who knows how long the fish drug the rod around before spitting the hook. That’s my tale of misery on the topic. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted May 15, 2021 Super User Posted May 15, 2021 A 7'2" Med Hvy with a buzzbait will cast a very nice new Ultralight combo a fair piece and spring fed ponds are cold 20' down even in the summer. Quote
mrpao Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 Lost a shimano aldebaran bfs limited on a cumara rod run down the lake. Looked back to see the rod handle sinking into the depths. Circled around but too late. Never got the combo back, even after dredging the area with some big treble hooks several days later. 1 Quote
VolFan Posted May 15, 2021 Posted May 15, 2021 Not a rod/reel but waaaay back in college I was kayaking on Calderwood in east TN when my flip phone rang. I flipped it open and right out of my hand and into the drink. As I lunged for it the sunglasses that were on my hat so I could see the phone followed it. Quote

SmugOne Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 Twice I have dropped pricey combos in the water while on my kayak. Fortunately for me, I had rod floats that did their job well. Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 16, 2021 Super User Posted May 16, 2021 I bought a BPS Johnny Morris reel and was trying to adjust the brakes on it. I dropped the sideplate in. They sent me another for $19. My ex monster in law threw my old Zebco 33 combo off our dock once. I caught it years later with a crankbait. That's about it. Quote

How did the reel look after several years resurrection? lol? Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted May 16, 2021 Global Moderator Posted May 16, 2021 I’ve lost a few over the years. Approx. 14 years ago the wife and I were fishing and she wanted to bring one of our Pugs on the boat. This dumb dog decided to jump off the front of the boat and went under it. As I circled around to grab him I must have kicked a spinning combo overboard. Last year or the year before 6poundbass and I were fishing and he grabbed my pitching set to use. As he was heading to the back of the boat he tripped on the bench seat and I heard “oh no!” As I turn around I see my rod and reel sinking into the abyss. I got a better set up out of the deal though. Quote
rangerjockey Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 I've lucky enough to grab 2 just in time.. My fishing buddy keeps one of those old chain stringers in his boat. Open up all the clips, put it on a flippin' stick and drag it where the rod was last seen headed for the bottom. I've seen it work. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 16, 2021 Super User Posted May 16, 2021 When we were dating, my wife wanted to fishing with me because she had never been before. I gave her an old Zebco 33 on a cheap pistol grip rod to fish with. My forethought paid off, because on her second or third cast, she dropped the rig right over the side into water about 30 feet deep. I still fish that lake and I always if that rig is still down there. One time, my dad and I were out fishing out of a jonboat during a rainstorm. We didn't have rainsuits, just ponchos. My dad sits down, puts down the BC rig, picked up the other rig, stands up, and the BC rig flies over the side. The only thing he could think of was he laid the rig down on the poncho, and when he stood up it got flipped out of the boat. Quote
Weht Boots Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 yeah... i will be putting foam on my rod handle now so it will float Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted May 16, 2021 Super User Posted May 16, 2021 That red coreless paracord around my reel foot and rod has a paracord buckle... ...that clips to a bungee leash - the leash slides freely on my kayak trolley line. Any rod out of sight and out of mind is kept this way. The working rod up front doesn't need to be clipped to the leash, but still wears the rod end so I can swap it into a leash when I change rods. Here's the rod end, paracord buckle and cord lock, 650 coreless paracord ends each tied to buckle using single turn with two half hitches. Can seize the paracord tags with acrylic/PE-film tape, or get salty with twine wrap. Last time I had a bad backlash, there was a one-turn line wrap around my rod tip. I swapped the reel with my back-up. Necessity is the mother of invention, and lost rod badge is a dubious honor at best. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted May 17, 2021 Super User Posted May 17, 2021 Lost a Shimano Core 101MG and a G. Loomis 844C about a month ago. The rod was fantastic but the reel was my favorite. We went over a large wake from a wave board boat that was unavoidable and it bounced right out. Just in case, it still hurts. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 17, 2021 Global Moderator Posted May 17, 2021 I about bounced a LTB/Tatula SV combo off the front deck while we were running Saturday. I managed to strap all my rods down but that one somehow. Thankfully I noticed it moving a little bit before we hit any big waves. I watched my BIL lose a 50E/Avid at Grand Lake over 100' of water and just keep running, looked at me and shrugged. I lost a pair of 580G Costas the same trip. We won the tournament and still lost money ? 2 Quote

I've seen it work. I've worked as a deckhand on several charter boats, and got to keeping a stick with two bunker snags tied on and ready to go in a rod holder. Got pretty good at grappling rods lost overboard by fares. Since they usually have line out, if you see it go in, you can snare it before it sinks too far. usually you get the line, and end up with the lure/bait and handline the rod in. Quote
Maggiesmaster Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 1) : I ‘lost’ a rod & reel combo once; looked all over, but didn’t find it. Finally, I poked around the dock & found it! Sent the reel to Lews for cleaning & it’s great now. 2): I bought a ‘refurbished’ reel from BassPro once. We’ll, it wasn’t ‘refurbished’ enough—-reel always backlashed & never worked. I finally removed it and hurled it as far in the lake as I could…..I felt really good! Quote
