President Harry S. Truman led the effort to establish a single holiday for citizens to come together and thank our military members for their patriotic service in support of our country.

On August 31, 1949, Secretary of Defense Louis Johnson announced the creation of an Armed Forces Day to honor and offer our profound appreciation and gratitude to the patriots who are serving in our Nation’s Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard.

Their professionalism and unwavering dedication to supporting and defending our Constitution has been vital in allowing our democracy to flourish, safeguarding peace and growing prosperity for our citizens, and giving hope to oppressed peoples or those facing tyranny abroad. Less than one percent of Americans serve on active duty in the Armed Forces.

Those who do volunteer to put their lives on the line to protect our country and democracy wherever they are called to serve.

Whether they are Active Duty, National Guard, or in the Reserve, they are true American heroes, and we all owe them.

Very well written as usual A-Jay

For those who don't know the difference.

Armed Forces Day is not the same as Veterans Day. Armed Forces Day is meant to salute the services of the US military people whose services are ongoing; while Veterans Day pays tribute to only veterans.

Personally I support both daily, so thanks to everyone currently serving & those who have served.

Great post A-Jay. I stand behind all our men in uniform, both past and present. I appreciate all who have served in any way. If you see a man in uniform, give him a nod and tell him thank you. Thank him for the service he's given his country.??

They are heroes!

My Dad a combat engineer in WW 2, always wondered why special days had to be made to honor anyone.
My uncle, his brother who served in the Marines on New Guinea felt the same way.
They just couldn’t get past that laws had to be made for that.

I for one are thankful they did.

Thanks A-Jay.  I'm glad there are civilians that appreciate what the Armed Forces and Law Enforcement does for the country.

However, there are a lot that don't or could care less, and a hellava lot of them have been elected to office in Washington.  So, you have to wonder why the people would care when the government don't.  The military and law enforcement is like insurance.  Everybody loves having it when they need it, but they don't won't to pay for it when they don't.

I know this is borderline political, so I hope it does not cause a problem.  I usually don't get into this kind of stuff, but have gotten just a bit frustrated with our current affairs.  If it does cross the line, please just delete of let me know and I will.

So PLEASE, NOT anyone else take this any further with other comments about what I posted and get it locked out.  I don't want to be responsible for a good post getting locked.

Just to be clear Keith ~

While I am also very glad to know that so many of the 99 % of this counties population that has not served (and never will), are supportive of the sacrifices made, both my wife & I are part of that other 1%.

I wish I would have understood what it meant to serve this country when I was younger. I didn't have an understanding till I was in my 30's, by then it was too late for me. I appreciate anyone who has ever made the decision to join the armed forces and make the sacrifices they have made. My son is 15 years old and if he ever tells me hw plans to join a branch of the armed forces you better believe I would be one proud Dad.

Thank you to all of those who have served!!!!!!
