Today I received my Scorpion BFS reel from Japan, it looks awesome. To me it looks just like the curado 70 reel. It should be fun catching big fish on this small reel. Does anyone else have this reel, and what do you think of it?

I think they are cool. Go catch some fish with it and tell us what you think.

Never fished it, still waiting for the Curado BFS I have on preorder. As far as I know, these are probably the same reels in different colors, but the scorpion is .4 oz lighter.

I recently set up a Steez BFS reel, and already had a blast with it.

Here, I was sailing a 3-g plug well past 100' with the wind behind me.

I have heard a lot of hype about this famous "steez" reel and how liked it is...until I saw the price lol. I will pay 250 - 350 dollars for a reel no problem, but I can't justify that price for a reel unless I was some kind of pro/die hard fisherman. I only fish 2-3 months out of the year if I had to guess. I am not knocking the steez, I'm sure it's well worth it.

My Lew's Super Duty G is still my longest-casting reel with 1/8 oz and up (not counting surf Abu CT's).

It took this far to duplicate it with 1/16th oz.  I own exactly two reels in this price range.  The Steez and a Shimano Vanquish.  They're both perfect for were I use them.  I also enjoy the tinkering of setting up my own spools.

The Steez happens to be the only salt-rated reel out of my gang of bass-size reels.

I certainly wasn't making a recommendation for you other than to enjoy your light-lure fishing.

Don't worry I know, I just wanted to comment about the steez. No need to explain yourself ?✌️

@galyonj

I wish more of the color had come out, the fish's back was the same purple as this Z-man Purple Demon

Hard to hold everything when you're trying to get the fish back into the water quickly.

and why on earth would a magnesium Steez with a functioning non-linear brake that doesn't need a chip be hype, and a plastic Scorpion with a chip isn't hype.

Say just once that Hagane isn't Hype.

You can get them all day long for $350 used in better than new condition.

You are right about that for sure, but much like a smartphone or computer, I don't like to buy reels used. Not to say it would have a problem, but just my preference. If I had to guess a lot of people probably think the same way in that regard.

And guys that think like me encourage you to keep thinking like you do. Yesterday I received a Daiwa SV 103 that is brand new but missing the handle and spool  for $200. 20 minutes later it has a Steez handle and an SV 103 spool. Great reel for the price of some pedestrian reel like a Tat or Curado...

Oh ya, you can find deals if you look around.

Legacy had a Patriarch ($200) reel in their used inventory. I ordered it and other than a small bit of rash on the left side plate, it's in perfect condition...I paid $70 for it.

That is a good buy indeed for a reel that is new, but still incomplete. What would suck is if you did not already happen to have a proper fitting handle or spool available already, and each of those can be around $100 or more each, new that is. Unfortunately for me I don't happen to have a collection of reel parts to swap around or add parts. If it were the case, I would probably look online for "new" reels that are missing a part here or there, but it's not practical for me especially not being a pro or die hard fisherman so to speak. If they say or advertise new, it better be new and with ALL of the parts lol, or I won't purchase it. That is just my feeling of the matter

That is sort of true. But really I can find a decent handle for about $30 and I think the spool cost me around $70. But even if I did have to put $200 into it, I  would be OK with it I think. I am getting a reel that is better made than most anything on offer today and a reel that even used examples that are not in new condition can go for $300-$350.

Oh, and I wasn't born with a stash of reel parts. I just ended up with one because I get a better reel for less money if I buy older top of the line reels and do some maintenance and upgrades on them, than I end up with if I just buy the same old middle of the road stuff that they sell new. And even the top of the line stuff now is arguably inferior to some of it made a few years ago.

I just bought a Scorpion MGL, Metanium 20, and a Bantam MGL new a couple of months ago too, so it's not like every reel has to be a gold nugget. And not every old model is worth fooling with. But some are and I'm glad when I find them.

Thank you for explaining your reasoning. I only assumed you had several parts of reels available because you said only 20 minutes later you had a proper handle and spool on the reel lol, so I know you did not order those parts online and get them on the same day. I have been loving the Bantam MGL too, I bought it last month. It is by no means the top of the line, but it is above average for sure, very impressive reel and solid

You assumed correctly, I happened to have the parts sitting around this time, but I still had to buy those parts at some point. You know how it is when you start fooling with stuff. A couple of wrong parts here and there, some ordered as spares and experiments, some projects that get sidelined, changed colors, didn't work out, and etc. and the next thing you know you've got a couple of boxes of stuff...I know some guys who are sitting on dozens of spools.
