Bass fly rod lures

[Smells like fish]

I dug out my “bugs” to try on a fly rod for bass & bluegills. That lil foam lure that looks like a ladybug/spider is what I caught my best fly rod bass on. It was a 16” Smallmouth in a creek but I can remember it’s fight a dozen years later. A whippy fly rod and the best I could do was just to wait til it tired. I had several of that lil simple foam bug but am down to one. There is also frog and mouse looking lures I’ve yet to use. I’m no fly fishermen but I’m gonna try to catch a few more bass in the coming days on these.

My best one has been a shrimp imitation intended for inshore saltwater fish. Looks kind of like a Fur Face bonefish shrimp fly. Pretty small but it has a stout hook that's held up to some really nice bass and even a few sturdy channel cats.

Ive yet to catch a bass over a half pound on the fly so I cant much say, but I do need to get some poppers and try. Ive only used a clouser minnow once and I'm not good at casting so it was all over the place.

You have a nice selection. Like you I don’t claim to be a fly fishing guru either. I like fishing Wooly Buggers and streamers for bass and trout. Also beaded nymphs but don’t believe I’ve ever caught a Smallie on a nymph. I’ve picked up a few different worm patterns (small worm) that have worked on both trout and Smallies. I believe they are called San Juan Worms. Don’t quote me on the name.

Wooly Buggers, poppers, and bunny leaches are my most used flies.

Grasshopper patterns are my go to. But there aren't many grasshoppers in my neck of the woods. Going to try some spiders next.

You need 5 power or better to efficiently use those bigger bass flies.  Superfly used to make a good foam popper that went as small as #8, better quality then the Wal Mart poppers.  If you dont mind making them yourself you would be surprised how well a toothpaste tube cap will work.

Boogle Bugs are the best poppers I’ve ever used. They make #8, #6, & #4. I’ve got a couple of 3500 boxes of each size.  In the creeks I fish, I use the #6’s the most as an all around. They’re easy to throw on my 6wt, and tend to be big enough to discourage the runt bream. All I’m looking for is some bend in the rod, whether it’s a good sized bream or a Spot and the #6’s work well for that.

I just tie some black hackle and maribou on a small hook, nothing fancy. fish it on heavy leader so it sinks slowly. I will tie some other colors, but the fish don't seem to care. a store bought stone fly is money for numbers (yes it will work if there are no stone flies where you fish, and no, it's not top water)...
