Super User jimmyjoe Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 I use both the 2.75" and the 3.75" Johnson Silver Minnow spoons. What do you suggest for trailers on these spoons? Thanks. jj 1 Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 jj, I like the Zoom split tail trailer, or sometimes a section of plastic worm threaded on the hook. When pork baits were still easy to come by, a #11 pork frog or Uncle Josh split tail eel were also good trailers. Glad to see your still throwing the old Silver Minnow. I use mine in mid summer when the weeds get thick. Great lure. 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 My favorites are 3 or 4 inch Mister Twister twister tails. Silver Minnows are a fantastic pike bait that are mandatory on a Canadian fly-in trip. Uncle Josh pork trailers are often talked about so I bought several different kinds back in the day but I found they always killed the action compared to a simple twister tail. 4 1 Quote

Two questions: 1) What is the chunk trailer at the top? 2) I always used spinnerbait skirts on my Silver Minnows, too. But they never lasted, and now cheap spinnerbait skirts aren't cheap anymore. Not only that, but when I tried to attach them the way you show in the second picture, they wouldn't stay in place. What are those skirts, or how do you get them to stay in place????? Super User Catt Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 @jimmyjoe The problem with Silver Minnows is there's not much hook shank beyond the spoon. Which is why the Pork Chunk worked so well...ya could get it off! 1) That's a Zoom Swimmin Chunk threaded on trying to penetrate the maximum plastic & still look good. 2) Super Glue 1 1 Quote

They were pretty cheap back then too. They are still not very expensive compared to every other plastic. I think Cabelas sells a package of 50 3” tails for $5. 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 Double tail grub, single grub, craw chunk, whatever I have. It all works. My favorite is the small chuck with ripple legs. 1 hour ago, Scott F said: My favorites are 3 or 4 inch Mister Twister twister tails. But the bulkier package can help fish find it on top of lilies. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 I find the single & twin tail grubs change the side to side wobble of the spoon. Now I must say if I'm throwing a spoon it's on top like y'all would fish a frog. If it's subsurface it's no more than an inch or two. To me the best action & staying on ability is a shirt. One can change the overall profile by using longer or shorter skirts, thinner or bulkier skirts. I throw two color spoons, gold or black in either 1/4 or 1/2 oz. 3 Quote

I use the rubber spinnerbait skirt exclusively. And I'm using the same two color spoons - gold or black - fished in the same manner. 3 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted May 14, 2021 Author Super User Posted May 14, 2021 Today I got these and these but unfortunately I forgot the superglue. I got those split-tail Mr. Twister trailers on one spoon (3.75") and they looked pretty good. IOW, the action is still good. I had to cut about 1/2" off the body to get it to fit correctly, though. Tomorrow I'll get some glue and try the skirts. I looked around and couldn't find the chunks locally. May need to order them. THANK YOU TO ALL! jj 3 Quote
Dogface Posted May 14, 2021 Posted May 14, 2021 I fish it naked and sometimes I use twister tails or what pork I have left. The Silver Minnow is one of my all time favorite lures here and in Canada. BTW I do like the idea of using spinner bait skirts on the lure and will try it. 1 Quote
