Super User DitchPanda Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 Are there any baits you go thru cycles of productivity with? Lipless is that way for me. The past few years I killed em on lipless...this year I haven't had a bite on one. 5 Quote
NavyVet1204 Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Good topic. For me I would have to say spinner bait actually. Last year was a lost cause for me with the chatterbait and now I have been having some luck with them whereas the spinner bait has been DOA so far. Quote
Super User Bird Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 Suspending Jerkbaits was the go to bait last year, pre-spawn. This year I've actually caught more on a Ned and whopper plopper. BUT we've had much more erratic weather this year. I wouldn't have qualified for a single tournament this year. Lol Quote
papajoe222 Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Crankbaits with rattles. The past couple of years my catch rate using them has really deteriorated. Water clarity is the same, but silent cranks outfish them 3 to 1 for some reason. 2 Quote

Caught a 4.92lb and three others in 45 minutes. The weedless aspect is nice but it seems to go hot and cold for me across the summer. Quote
cal9323 Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Flukes for me. Last year, I was tearing them up. This year - nothing. I would say only 3 baits are always consistent for me. 1. Ned Rig - TRD 2. Senko 3. Paddletail Swimbait If I don’t catch anything on those 3, I would assume there just isn’t any fish in the water. lol 2 Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 All of them at one time or another. 3 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 The waters I fish change all the time and so do the productive baits . One year jigging spoons got hot . I used them all summer and fall that year , then havent caught bass on them since . Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Ditch, the lipless has been crap for me this year, too. Also, spinnerbaits have gotten me nothing, and they had previously been an April-May staple for me. Deep diving cranks used to be real cold for me, last couple of years they've been hot! Quote
Super User gim Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 I can't specifically comment about this season because ours isn't legally open yet. However, I've noticed a pattern the past 5-6 years using topwater lures in general. The bite using them is virtually non-existent. It used to be pretty good about 8-10 years ago too, especially in the slop with a hollow body frog. I still have a dedicated setup with a topwater tied on every time I go, and use it for at least a brief period of time, but it just doesn't work anymore. Its kind of a buzz kill too because I really like fishing topwater. Its a really exciting, explosive way to fish at times. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 I know I'll go through periods where I'll fish one type of lure a lot more than another. But I think that has more to do with what I like than what the fish actually like. The last couple of years I haven't been too much into T-rigged worms and craws. They just haven't produced for me. But I've talked to quite of few other anglers at the docks that say that's been their No. 1 bait on the same days I couldn't get a nibble. Then I'll tell them that they really seemed to be keying in on cranks and spoons, and they'll tell me that they can't buy a bite on those. To be fair, I think most of the fishing pressure on my local lakes come from worms, minnows, and other live baits. Which thinking about it now, could help explain why finesse fishing never seems to do me much good. Quote
Super User Catt Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 All of em! Right now they only thing I can get a bite on is an Vltra Vibe Speed Craw in white with half the claw dipped in chartreuse. I'm Texas Rigging it on Mustad's Denny Brauer Grip-Pin Max Flippin' Hook 3/0 with a 3/16 oz tungsten weight. This setup is speed reeled just under the surface. Everything else is ice cold ? Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 I don't have baits that go hot and cold, the fish have a bunch. Quote
Kenny Yi Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Any technique that I recently discovered, catch the first fish with it, then abuse it for the rest of the week. That's as hot and cold as it gets. Quote
InfantryMP Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 Chatterbaits seem to be hot for me right now, specifically White, with a white eeliminator trailer (If you have not tried that combo yet, you may want to) Crankin has been cold for me. I have not caught a fish crankin since last summer (incidentally hooked my crank through my finger as well) Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted May 13, 2021 Super User Posted May 13, 2021 The standard Spook. The first time I ever used one, I mopped up on a school of 3 pounders. I caught 8 on 8 casts. I hooked a 9th that broke me off and took my Spook. I tied on a Pop R and didn't get another bite. Of course, I immediately went out and bought a couple more. I didn't get a bite on it for almost 2 decades after this episode until I caught one early on a summer day last year. Quote
Luke Barnes Posted May 13, 2021 Posted May 13, 2021 I would say paddletails. I bought some new underspins and have been chucking them a bunch but the bass just aren't super active yet where I'm at. Ive done best on stick baits this year, which this year is the first year ive dedicated to throwing wacky/Neko Quote
Super User Mobasser Posted May 14, 2021 Super User Posted May 14, 2021 Same for me with lipless baits. I've been using them the past few trips because they cast good in the wind. But they havnt worked well so far. Quote
