Chaos10691 Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 So I am getting a spinning setup and I made the mistake of researching a bunch of stuff and over complicating things. My last spinning setup was a MF that I used mainly for wacky rigs, but I want to try other things as well. I need a spinning setup for drop shots (nose hooked and Texas rigged) wacky rigs, and Ned rigs. What power and action would be best for this Medium Fast, Medium Light Fast, or Medium Light Xtra Fast? Also, as a second question, what would be a good sized reel? Depth: anywhere from 5ft to even 20+ ft. Weight: weightless to 1/4 oz Cover: little to sparse. Mainly fishing from a kayak Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted May 12, 2021 Super User Posted May 12, 2021 I assume you are targeting bass? Fishing near any cover? What weights do you plan to use? How deep do you plan to fish? Anything under a 3/16 I would go ML, anything 3/16 - 1/4 I would go M, 3/8 + MH I like a 2500 or 3000 size reel. 1 Quote

Ned rigs are 1/8 and 3/16 drop shots will be 3/16 and 1/4 and wacky rig is weightless. Depth will vary. Could be 5 ft could be 20ft. Cover not so terribly much. Mainly rock and that slimy algae stuff. I might toss it near sparse grass and logs but that would be it. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted May 12, 2021 Super User Posted May 12, 2021 I would go ML F as a do-it-all approach. I don't fish a lot of spinning gear. I have a ML and a M and if I could only have one, I think the ML would do the job. I use 15lb braid on it FWIW. 1 Quote

GetFishorDieTryin Posted May 12, 2021 Posted May 12, 2021 Do you still have the M F outfit? What kind of line you use? What bait do you wacky rig the most and the size? Fishing from boat or bank? 1 Quote
Super User S Hovanec Posted May 12, 2021 Super User Posted May 12, 2021 MLXF is my go-to for dropshot. I have about a half dozen or so in that power/action. 2 Quote

Would the difference between a fast and xtra fast be that noticeable? I ask because the rod I want only has MLXF. 6 hours ago, GetFishorDieTryin said: Do you still have the M F outfit? Hers was old and the reel she had barely turned. Also wacky rig senko 5” and I’m fishing mainly from a kayak. Quote

I can tell but i play with many many blanks. just like with rod power though, one manufacturer's XF is another manufacturer's F. I think St Croix's action ratings are pretty true in SC3 and up. The jury is still out on the Vctory series. I haven't played with that MLXF enough yet. I will say this about it:. It's nowhere near as powerful as an Avid/LTB/LE. 1 Quote

I would have to agree with you on that about St. Croix Rods. XF is going to be that. I fish my plastics on SC rods. I don’t fish all my plastics XF some are just fast action. I prefer the XF on drop shot and split shot rigging. Quote

I don't know where my last reply went.....grrrr. Unless something has changed with the Avids since I sold my two MLXFs a few years ago, they were equal in power to my sC4 and SC5 MLXFs. I would place the victory MLXF at about the same power as my old avid Light/Fast. Quote

On paper the weight range may be similar but in hand and for practical purposes the ML has much more power. The only reason the Vic doesnt have the 1/8-1/2 rating is because of the XF action. Honestly I think 1/8-1/2 MLs blanks are fish lighter, if you have ever tried to throw .5oz on the ML you would know what I mean. Quote
