Super User NYWayfarer Posted May 15, 2021 Super User Posted May 15, 2021 I am an operations manager for a special needs trust. To sum it up simply: Developmentally, physically and mentally disabled individuals that inherit, receive or need to shelter money, join one of my companies trusts so they don’t lose everything over their looming medical bills. The trust allows them to stay in the community until their demise. No one wants to see their loved one in a nursing home. The trusts allow them to avoid that. My job is to manage the crew that helps them pay their bills and make the money in the trust last as long as possible. 6 1 Quote

I feel like I really help people at the end of the day. Prior to my 15 years at this job I spent 15 years working at a bank in back office operations. What a soul sucking occupation that was. The best thing that happened to me was getting laid off after 9/11 from my downtown Manhattan job. I moved to an area I love and found this job as well. 1 Quote

I am really good at explaining what I do in layman terms. 1 server = 1 person in car. A car(server) has an engine (CPU), seats (HDD space) and uses roads (networking) You drive around in your car and use it 10% of the time, other 90% sits around doing nothing 1 bus = 40 people The bus drives 40 people around and takes them where they want to go. This takes less energy, costs less than 40 cars. I am the bus driver. I take 40 servers (cars), combine them all into one computer (bus) and every server shares it's resources of that one computer. HCI - I am the bus fleet manager also. Not only do I drive the bus, I have multiple buses hauling around people and have a whole garage full of buses so if one breaks, another pulls up 30 seconds later. Not only do I drive the bus, manage the fleet, I can design a fleet of buses that suit your needs from 2 people all the way to 1000 using the least amount of money, energy and resources. I also own the roads. I can make sure that certain people never see traffic and get to where they want without any delay. I can also let someone else car drive on my road without effecting my buses. To sum up, I manage 400+ bus fleets all over the world, hauling around 30,000 people and I allow over 500,000 other drivers on my roads. VMware is just the name of the company I use just like GreyHound. 2 Quote

shimmy Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 What a great idea for a thread. Really neat to see several jobs where even in the job description, I still don't have the intelligence to understand what the job entails. I went to school for a million years and got my doctorates in clinical psychology. Been working in a prison for 6 years. Not dull to say the least. Do private practice and contract work on the side. 8 Quote

InfantryMP Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 I am a Program Manager in HR. More specifically, I manage Veteran Recruiting Programs for multiple clients who want to start or innovate their respective Veteran Recruiting programs. After I spent 12 years in the Army, and some time as an Army Recruiter and Station Commander, it really became a passion to help Veterans secure meaningful employment. I get to work from home 100%, so there are a lot of days working on the water! 5 Quote
Russ E Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 I worked in the automotive industry as a controls engineer for 30 years. I was able to retire 5 years ago at the age of 53. I get together with my former coworkers occasionally. Beyond that I do not miss the stress of that job. for the last 5 years I have been spending most of the time taking care of my handicapped wife and fishing every chance I get. Life is pretty good. 4 Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted June 7, 2021 Posted June 7, 2021 I was a Resident Advisor in college...led to a Hall Director gig after graduation. Stayed in higher education earning a Master's degree and supported the now ex-wife as she finished undergrad, and got in to medical school. We moved around a little, I did two years as a computer consultant / trainer...then back to higher education where I served as director of campus activities, student union, student development, chief judicial officer and and then a housing director. In 2005 had the opportunity to move our family back to home (Nebraska), and we decided I would be a stay-at-home-dad to our two young daughters. That lasted 4 years...divorced the doctor wife, and she gave me custody of the kiddos, I got the house in addition to child support and alimony. I got back in to higher education 12 years ago. I'm now the Director of Undergraduate Academic Advising at a small, private, not-for-profit University here in Nebraska. Good gig with great people and fantastic leadership! I also run a side business as a photographer (www.daubertphotography<dot>com), that helps feed the fishing habit : ) 1 Quote

Had an active shooter in my Residence Hall on college campus...turned out to be a drunk college student with a BB gun, but we didn't know that at the time. This was in the 90's...campus police, city police, and state troopers were called. I had the master key, and had to open the door to his room...not going to lie...thought there might be gunshots Had a fire in our Residence Hall...in the trash chute. Minimal damage, and no injuries, thank GOD! Got to meet Dave Chappell, Jim Lovel, Alan Page (Minnesota Vikings Dlineman), Whitey Herzog, when they performed on our campus. Lots of drunk people, fights, sneaking girls in to rooms after hours. No suicides in my buildings...rare for anyone working University Housing for any amount of time. Those are the ones I'm remembering today...Been at this since 1989... Quote
