I'm trying to be sure to always use my kill switch lanyard, despite a lifetime of not having or using one.  Mine has a plastic clip on the end and I usually find something on my clothing to attach it to.  But I always seem to forget it's attached, move away from the helm, and unplug the switch.

How do you folks get in the habit of using it, and what are the most convenient ways to make it part of everyday use?

My Kill Switch lanyard is attached to my life jacket.

So I need both to get on plane.

Mine is also attached to my life jacket. Anytime I get behind the wheel of the boat, the life jacket goes on and the lanyard never comes off. The thing is, if it is ever necessary for the kill switch to shut the engine off, it’s almost certain that I’m going to be in the water and the life jacket is going to be needed.

This.  One of my goals this year was to always wear my life jacket with the kill switch attached whenever running.  Been better but still forget sometimes (like yesterday).

But to the OP's question- I attach the kill switch clip to a small carabiner that I attach to my life jacket.

Mine goes on my wrist...but it is a tiller boat so my wrist is pretty much connected to the motor.

Pfd always. Big motor doesn’t get started without both.

I always wear an inflatable PFD and just clip it to the strap.

I used to always attach it to the pfd, but my new one doesn’t have a decent spot to hook up to so now I wrap it around my leg just below my knee and clip it together there. It’s close to the attachment point on the boat, and I can feel it in my leg every time I’m running so I always remember to unhook it before I stand up. I figure if I’m going overboard, there’s a pretty good chance my right leg is coming with me as well ?

Another PFD attachment here too.

I also attach mine to my life vest. What do you guys do when running your trolling motor. If the motor is on constant, you hit a stump or something and get tossed from the boat, what then. Never really thought that much about it, but now that I'm older and maybe my balance is not as good as my younger years, I've started being a bit concerned.

Used to clip it to my belt loop or put it around my wrist, but I just pick up and inflatable life vest, it has a D-ring for it.  I fish by myself most of the time..

Yup.  And, like GRiver, I fish by myself most of the time.  Getting older makes me more aware of my mortality... I even took the BoatUS boating safety course this week, despite being a boater for 35 years!

Thanks for all the responses,

Bob

PFD, but I wear mine at all times so I have to remember to remove it whenever I get up, otherwise I have that "oh crap", moment when the motor won't start next time I try to move spots.

I used to attach it to my belt loop too, but I got tired of forgetting it, getting snapped in the butt when I got up to hit the deck, and having to reconnect it. I moved it to my PFD because I wear that whenever I get in/out of the driver's seat.

I just got a wrist strap for this season.  I've been out twice this year and used the strap without forgetting to take it off and and getting snapped by the kill cord.  :occasion14:

I take mine off when I fish. One, I’m still young, athletic, balanced, and coordinated. Two, I don’t fish in stump fields nor do I fish in sizable waves. Unless I step on a banana peel and bonk by head, I’m not going overboard when the main outboard isn’t running. IMO you’d have to be doing something pretty crazy with your bow mount to hit an obstacle and go in the drink.
