Let's go I got highest honors in my school's academic awards! That means I got a 4.0 GPA or higher!

Edit: Sorry if the title causes confusion. I'm a freshman in high school, and sorry if this changes anyone's opinions. I am Joshua Lindsay btw.

Fantastic! Congrats to you for a job well done.

Now, it is time to head off to college and you will find out, very fast, that college is not like high school.

No teachers' pets; no easy grades from the professors; very large freshman classes where the prof will present the material and he does not care if you get it or not; taking care of your money; washing your clothes; time management;  lots of free time to have fun or fish; meeting some lovely young ladies, especially the ones at Michigan (prettiest girls in the Big 10); if you go to Ohio State you will get to know cows and mules (both animals and girls); going to the football games; yelling your head off with the other fans; and don't be surprised at the drop out/flunk out rate is high as a lot of kids who were high school pets cannot make it in the real world of college academics.

I suggest where ever you go to college you go to the library and find out if they have old tests that you can review by your professors. At LSU the Middleton Library had the old exams for a few profs and we got together to study the questions and answers before the exams. So check it out.

Just remember two things: first, it is harder to get out of college than to get in; and second, college will be the best 5 or 6 years of your life as you will make lifelong friends and have a fun time.

Now go out there and meet some really nice and pretty girls and study, study, and study.

Well, did you make the National Honor Role.  That puts the icing on the cake.

That was not possible for me.   I usually aced every test I took, but was lucky to make a passing grade.

I don't think there was more than a couple of times I ever turned in a lick of homework.  Never had time to do it.   Teachers gave lectures all the time about how it was a waste for me to do so good on test and not do the homework.

Actually, I thought college was a lot easier than grade schools.

I had somewhat of a photographic memory where I could read a book a couple of times and then when taking written test, I could bring up the page it was on in the book and get the answer.    I have always sucked on oral test though.

That worked great for me in the military.  All there test questions were written word for word right out of the study manuals and I almost aced them.  Thus making rank very quickly.   I actually got investigated and made to retest one time to prove I wasn't cheating.

Thanks for the advice for college. I'll reread this when I'm a Senior in about 4 years! Almost there!

You should be a senior in three years. You sure you made an A in math? :)

Lol I wasn't thinking at all when I posted this. I just finished a lot of homework at the time, so I just wasn't thinking.

Regardless of what grade you're in, it's still an accomplishment to be proud of.

Its the opposite for me, I get 100% on all my homework and do extra credit but when a quiz or test comes around my grade plummets.

It's just math.

Like the 3 guys that pay $7 each for a room = $21

The inn keepers husband says that's too much and give the janitor $5 to take back to them.

He figures $5 is going to be hard to divide among three people so he pockets $2 and gives each of them back $1.  So, they only had to pay $6 each for the room.

Now, since they each got back $1, so they only paid $6 each.  3 time $6 is $18.

The janitor only kept $2, so if they only paid $18 and the janitor kept $2, that only equals $20.

Where did that other dollar go.

Another mind game you can play with math.

Write these numbers down on a piece of paper, then cover them with another piece of paper and slide it down one row at the time, having them add them out loud as you slide it down.  98% of them are going to get the wrong answer.  They are going to answer 5000.  Some will actually argue with you about it.

It also shows why you should be careful about doing math in your head.

1000

   40

1000

   30

1000

   20

1000

  10

Luckily my teachers are pretty leanient on missing work, especially because of the covid. My tests are pretty good, and I've gotten better this semester, but in the 1st semester, I sucked at finishing work on time.

Congrats young man.

Worked with my hands my entire life so a 4.0 to me was a reliable inline engine.

Yes, teachers see this in many people. Taking tests can be a monstrous challenge for some people who know the subject matter but get a case of "the nerves" when taking a test.

And one more observation: the more you know of the subject matter the harder it is to take a test.

For those who have no clue, answering the questions is easy.

For those who know the subject inside-out have a problem with the answer as they can apply the knowledge to the question in different ways.

This theory is one of two things I learned from the Dean of the University of Richmond Business College when I was an adjunct professor. The second thing I learned is if you are losing your voice drink some Coke and it will bring your voice back. A politician's trick.

You will do great in college. Have a fun time; meet lots of new people; make new lifetime friends; and go to all the football, basketball, and baseball games you can attend.

One last thing: when you and your buddies want to go to New Orleans for Mardi Gras, be sure to:

1.  Look at the young lady's Adams Apple when approached in a bar or in the street!

2.  Keep some bail money in your sock.

3.  Wear your college or an LSU sweatshirt to get the float riders to throw you stuff.

4.  DO NOT WEAR ANYTHING TULANE as the riders are 99% LSU fans and you won't get anything thrown your way.

5.  Don't look at the girls raising their shirts for beads or you will go blind.\

6.  It is OK to look into the strip club as you walk by.

7.  Pat O'Brien's is a great place for college kids as the piano players know the fight songs of almost every college in America.

8.  You can get a Hurricane glass at Pat O'Brien's to take home but remember, it is a sweet rum drink that will hit you in the head in an hour after you drink it.

9.  Get a Cyclone glass, too, to take home.

10.  Have a fun time watching the parades.

11.  Don't tell your parents you went to the Mardi Gras until you get back to school or else you ain't going!

Good luck.

Never too late to understand what happens in college.

I know you know via your UT experience, and so far everyone that I have met who was a UT grad was a super person, a good sport, a knowledgeable SEC fan, and nice to be with.

College is not for everyone but the more you know what you will be facing in the future the better prepared you will be.

Nice. But you've still got some time to upgrade that one. I'll reward myself with a fishing trip for putting the right shoe on the right foot, taking out the trash, getting the mail, walking the dog, waving to a neighbor, cutting a light off as I exit a room, not missing an eye on a rod when respooling, etc.?

Yes, I wanna catch my PB this year! I like to reward getting a homework assignment done.
