Andreas1509 Posted May 3, 2021 Posted May 3, 2021 Hey everyone, I’m thinking about getting the penn battle 3 inshore combo for freshwater bass fishing. Would that be alright? Is there anything else better that I could get for 150$? Thank you! 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted May 3, 2021 Posted May 3, 2021 Most salt water rod and reel combos are bigger and heavier than their fresh water counterparts. I can't see why it wouldn't work as long as using it does not wear you out. Casting and retrieving all day with a heavy outfit is tough on your body, especially your wrists and elbows. A heavy rod may not have the sensitivity to feel light strikes. On the other hand, I use fresh water tackle for inshore salt water fishing. As long as the drag and line capacity are up to the task, it works for me. Quote

If you want a MH freshwater, I'd buy a M saltwater, unless you intend to use it in salt as well. I have a 40 size Pflueger Trion on a MH freshwater rod and it's a pretty heavy combo. I'd prefer a 30 size on it, but it won't wear out and it has whooped a bunch of good bass. I'd go with something like this before that Penn combo. Looking at the Penn it's a graphite composite rod that will be less sensitive. This combo will be better suited for bass. https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/lews-mach-2-spinning-combo?repChildCatid=7769504 Or this https://www.academy.com/shop/pdp/kastking-crixus-spinning-5-ft-6-in-6-ft-6-in-freshwater-saltwater-fishing-combo?repChildCatid=10169202 I have one of these Crixus rods and it's very light and sensitive. 3 Quote
garroyo130 Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 The Battle is more of a bait rod and is indeed heavy. If I had to pick a rod to do double duty I'd be looking at Star Rods Stellar Lite series or Tica's Dolphin series of rods. Both can be had for under the $150 you mentioned. 3 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted May 4, 2021 Super User Posted May 4, 2021 As long as the power and action are adequate, salt in the fresh, or fresh in the salt is all good. I use my old flipping sticks as salt inshore sticks, and use some inshore sticks for large swimbaits and the like. One thing I will say is that most salt water sticks will be lacking in sensitivity for contact baits compared to decent bass rods made for the purpose. 3 Quote
