Bass eating bass (1st person POV)

So this is probably more common than I realize, but this is the first time it's actually happened to me.  

 

I was having a pretty slow day, so I pulled out a SK Ned bug to try and get a few bites.  I hooked a 10ish inch bass and just before I flipped him up, saw a shadow behind him.  When I paused, the other fish turned and I saw a clear lateral line.  Curious, I played the fish I had a caught and the next thing I saw was a giant bucket mouth open and engulf my catch.  It latched on long enough to strip drag for a few seconds... Seemed like a few minutes.  Ultimately the fish (I'm going to guess a 6+) let go, and I landed and released the original fish unharmed.  

 

I've seen video of stuff like this, but to have it happen at my feet was a pretty cool deal.

Bass eat everything that fits into it’s mouth and some things that don’t.

To bass baitfish are any young of the fish or small juveniles.

Bass, Carp, Catfish, Sunfish, Crappie, Bluegill, Sculpin, Trout,  Salmon, Smelt, Suckers, Herring, Shad are just a few on the menu.

Exiting experience when a big bass grabs a smaller bass you are fighting next to the boat.

Happens all the time.  Small bass don't hang out with big ones for this very reason.  Until they get to a certain size, they stay with like size bass.  After that everyone around them is potential food.

A few days ago I had a giant walleye latch onto the back of a 14" largemouth I had by the lip and was lifting out of the water. The bass had splashed on the surface for a couple seconds while I was trying to grab him and must have attracted the walleye's attention. The walleye looked at me and decided to let go but the bass went crazy and I lost my grip. He was still hooked though. That was a first.

I had a bass I'm pretty sure was a DD fish engulf a 14" bass, plus a jerkbait with 3 trebles, then blow the whole mess back out without getting the hooks fishing a strip pit once. I've had a 4.5lber eat a 6-7 inch bass that had smacked a popper while I was fighting it in. That one wasn't so lucky and I landed both.

I caught this bass at my buddy's pond. It was maybe 2 lbs., big for his pond though. It had about an 8" bass down its throat. I have to estimate because, obviously, some of it was digested. It looked as big around as it did long when i caught it. He tells me to keep everything because they're stunted, but I just had to throw that one back. It's a stone cold killer and stands a chance at getting big. There isn't enough bait in that pond for both the bass and bluegills. And most of the bluegills have gotten too big to be eaten. So any bass that can eat bass stands a good chance of being "special".

Yeah, every so often I catch a bass with a tail in it's mouth of a bass, usually about 1/4 it's size. I'm always looking down their throats to look for what they've been eating.

They'll certainly do it. Have you seen the video of the bass in the BPS store tank try to eat another bass? It's a fish probably pushing DD attempting to swallow a 2-3 pound bass and then spits it out after a few minutes.

If they didn’t eat their own, there’s an awful lot of bass colored lures out there that won’t catch anything.?. Had a 50 inch class musky on st Clair engulf a 3lb smallie and not let go until both were boatside.

One of the best topwaters out there is the bass pattern Spook. But if there's a style of bait that color matters the least it's topwaters. A deadly way to rig them is tie a Frontrunner a little ahead of the bait so when you walk it, it looks like a small bass chasing a baitfish. It increases the chance at a double as well.

I don't recall ever having this happen bass fishing, but several times when fly fishing for trout I've had a big brown trout try to eat the stocker size rainbow I had hooked. That creates a little excitement as well!

Sheesh, that is amazing but what's even more amazing is that if I saw it correctly, when the big 'un spit the 2lber out, the 2lber was still alive and even more amazing, just lazily swum around and didn't get the hell outta there from that big 'un! That is wild.
