Deplorable Fisherman Posted May 3, 2021 Posted May 3, 2021 I don't think they're going to compete with the leader in fishing line which is Berkley now that they're part of the same family. And I have been loving Berkley x9 and x5 braid...it's become my go to over Daiwa J-Braid. Spiderwire in the day was all the rage. I remember the commercials and all the other products they were coming out with Mitchell. My buddy still has a couple of Spiderwire bait casters and rods in his garage. 1 Quote

I did decide to try different brands to see if there really was a difference. I do end up buying 832 first these days. PP's cheaper flat line got stripped after one use. Hopefully someday I'll find a hi-viz braid that doesn't loose its color dye. 832 Sufix did that to me when I bought the neon yellow braid in 40lb last year. I don’t think the color lasted more than three trips. 1 Quote
throttleplate Posted May 3, 2021 Posted May 3, 2021 using spider wire since 1991, the only problem to this day is the green fades after the first 8 hrs of fishing. Two weeks ago spooled up some new spiderwire stealth green moss color and after 3 days of use it is now looking very light faded green and this is just the way its been since 1991. 1 Quote

That berkley x5 and x9 is great. It’s been my go to line since it came out. Love it! 1 Quote
Black Hawk Basser Posted May 4, 2021 Posted May 4, 2021 I used to frequently use it, but I eventually went with 832 and never looked back, until...I discovered Kast King braid. It's pretty comparable to 832, but much cheaper. I only use it for my light crank rod though, in 15 lb. I still use 20 or 30 lb 832 on my heavier rods. 1 Quote

krustysurfer Posted August 29, 2022 Posted August 29, 2022 Im beginning to hate its stiff characteristics, (mind you im using 15lb spiderwire ez-braid) I took it off my BFS baitcasting reel Piscifun spark pro model even though its diameter is equivalent of 4lb mono it casts terribly anything weighing under/less than 3gm's My spool bought at wally world was not too expensive however (1st foul) was missing 150' of line (somebody pulled a fast one) secondly its stiff, thirdly coated in some sort of waxy substance which leaves a green film on my fingers and causes friction and hang ups when casting and during retrival, you can feel and hear the catching then releasing. I just spooled up my sons zebco (33) spincast with it. After spooling with 150 ft of 15lb spiderwire ez-braid its almost impossible to get it to flow out of the reel opening totally binding up on its way out of the front of the zebco spincast (was spooled with 12lb 'cajun' mono which worked wonderfully) im completely disappointed in its performance on my baitcaster but now also on the spincaster... I think spiderwire is crap, its only redeeming quality is its strength. Change my mind somebody, I wanna believe the hype. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted August 29, 2022 Super User Posted August 29, 2022 The only Spiderwire I liked was the original. They haven't made it since the 1990s. Quote
r83srock Posted August 29, 2022 Posted August 29, 2022 I used original spiderwire a few times. My dads friend taught me to fish grass weedlines with it. I remember the feedback was unreal compared to the Trilene XL I was using at the time. If I remember correctly, the line seemed to be uncoated and I thought it might have been a three strand weave not 4. I also used Berkley whiplash and spiderwire stealth, those two seemed to be the exact same line. Once power pro came out we tried it and it’s still what we use. I’ve used lots of other braids since, quite a few I’ve liked, but seem to always go back to original power pro. Quote
Revival Posted August 29, 2022 Posted August 29, 2022 I remember trying Spyderwire back in the early 2000’s. First line that I truly hated. I had a lot if issues with it and never went back. These days there are so many options that I personally don’t have a reason to go back. Quote

The way spincast reels are made and the way braided line is braid is the worst possible choice to put on a spincast reel. You need the change it out and put monofilament line back on it. 2 Quote

Super User MN Fisher Posted August 30, 2022 Super User Posted August 30, 2022 Tried original Spiderwire back in the 80s...hated it. Tried again with the 'new formula - yep, just as bad if not worse. If you want a 'superline', stick with a good braid....otherwise as noted - nylon monofilament. Quote
