Even after trying BFS, it just feels so much like a novelty thing whereas spinning gear feels more practical.

Agreed, but that might be exactly why I think it's fun to try BFS vs. the spinning gear... it's "new" and different.

I feel BFS may be more a novelty for bass fishermen since the baits used are often 1/4 oz or better total weight.  I fish trout mostly and find it better than a L or UL spinning outfit.  The accuracy, control, and capability to cast with a low trajectory really make me enjoy it much more.

For me it’s not “will a given rod cast a 1/4oz presentation at all” but “will a given rod have 1/4oz as it’s sweetspot?”   A lot of MH and even some H bass rods have a lower limit of 1/4oz, but if I am going to be throwing presentations of that weight, I want a rod with 1/4oz at the middle of it’s range, so either BFS or a spinning rod.

As with anything, it's preference. For me, I enjoy baitcasters more. Spinning reels are fun to use, but when under load, they just don't feel that great to me. They feel awkward and less powerful. This isn't a big issue with finesse applications, but just that alone drives me away from them, for the most part.
