Man....Senko/Dinger/Tiki/*** bait (senko stick style worms) sure got a bad rep in this thread. Can't see why but hey, there is more to it than the bait itself.

Conditions are much more often the results of I should say the lack of results due to various conditions like confidance, technique, color, water clarity, moon phases, postition of the planets, how the fish "feels" that day, if you dropped the trolling motor in the water really loud, if you paid your rent on time, etc. (joke) Seriously, conditions and technique make or break a lure.

For you that have voted for the following baits, there is more to it than the bait. See statement above.

  • So far, I've caught my personal best on a buzzbait and I've caught many on a buzzbait. Slow steady retrieve....nothing fancy.

  • I have yet to catch one on the chatterbait but I still throw it on occasion just so I can catch one on it.

  • I have several crankbaits but I've lost more fish than I have caught...(totally an angler issue)

  • Spinnerbaits I like because they very weedless and you can cover a lot of water. I've caught several on them

  • Plastic worms......I mean come on! If you are having trouble catching a fish on a plastic worm, make yourself a personal goal and get past that. It's like FISHING 101...the basics. Yes size, color, presentation, etc. all effects plastic baits success rates.

What's the most overrated lure in my opinion?

I have to say the chatterbait and that is only because of the hype that follows them. It's not because it's the most un-productive lure, it's the most over-rated. It's reputation and hype exceeds it's productivity for many. There are some who love it, they know something everyone else does not.

The chatterbait got all the hype a couple of years ago in Florida in which there were many tournaments won with it, all within a few months. The hype exploded on it and everybody just had to have one. I was one of those guys.

I think the chatterbait did so well in Florida a couple of years ago because of the time of year (early spring) when the fish were real active and didnt mind chasing down something to eat. Another factor was that they could be fished effectively over/around/thru the grass, cover a lot of water and it was totally new to the bass. It was a whole new "thump" coming by and they were not accustomed to it then. Those guys were hammering bass with 'em when they first started throwin them.

I still use the chatterbaits but in the summertime, its strictly a night bait, in fact, its replaced the spinnerbait for me at night. In the spring there are two lakes that my club fishes that it does great at and both have grass. I come back home the next day and can barely get a bass to look at it. My home lake has no grass and dont do very well with it during the day but I can catch fish with it at night. Its a strange lure indeed.

first thing that i've heard about a chatterbait that makes sense. Night Bait for sure. Loud like jitt-r-bug.

b (for daytime, they should call it a scatter-bait).........at least for me.

Scatterbait  ;D.....nice!

TRUE STORY!!! Banjo minnow will produce....just give it time! i personally dont like them, but my fishing partner uses them like there holy....and he catches them all of the time......i guess the main thing is, you have to be able to see the bait, because the bites are soooo light.

You did say that price is part of the issue, so:

Any soft plastic that is over 40 cents each.

Any hard lure over $8

Any spinner over $5.

I have or can get similar that will catch the same fish for less.

I'm sorry, but saying senko-type lures are overrated is ludicrous. No lure has had a greater impact on bass fishing in the last 10 years. This is a lure that needs only to be cast and allowed to fall in order to catch fish. They work 12 months a year anywhere in the country for any species of bass. Maybe you didn't catch your pb on one on your first cast but that doesn't make them overrated.

For me, I would have the say the Rat-L-Trap (Rattletrap) lures are over-rated.

Boy o Boy, I have tried and tried these, and have just never done well with them. I have caught a few here and there, but not many at all.

Maybe im just throwing the wrong color at the wrong time!

Rattle Trap is one of my more productive lures. I usually do well just burnin em reel fast.

As for the most overrated I'd have to say I think the spinner bait is the most overrated. Been using em for years and never caught anything.

O.K. just kidding.  ;D Love spinners. Hate chatterbaits though. Bought one last year and still haven't caught anything on it. Even tried fishing it like a jig and nada.

Terminator spinnerbaits.

After snapping the third one at the "R" bend, I simply could not justify spending twice as much for an untunable spinner that will just end up snapping like steel ones.  It may last a little longer, but I like to tinker with blade configuration and combinations.  The tandem blade configuration on a titanium wire limits what can be done about changing the front blade.

When it comes to a bait being "overrated", it is seldom the bait's fault, but more due to the angler using it.

Everyone (including me) has been guilty of this:  You read about or hear about a new bait or at least a bait new to you and you rush out and buy one, two or a dozen and then the next trip out, tried to force-feed those baits to the bass.  The usual result was no luck and the baits ended up in the garage, bottom of the boat, back of the tackle box, etc.

IMO, a minimum of one season is required to feel out a new bait and apply it to a range of conditions.  I have some great fall crankbaits that hardly get a sniff the rest of the year.  If I had given up on 'em, I would have never found that out.

Every bait has a time and place.

although my PB came on a tiki stick, i have to go with senko type baits as well...i have caught plenty of fish on them, but only one with any size to it...most of my better fish this year have come on a LC crank...where my rapala crank have only produced one dink...IMO it is worth the 15 bucks a pop for the LC's

Well-stated, Brad.  Some lures are only good under certain conditions and during certain seasons.  Using those lures outside of those conditions results in a much lower success rate.  This is why the plastic worm and jigs are always considered great baits.  They work in just about every season and under just about any conditions.  (Including Senkos and Senko type worms.   ;))

18 years ago Bill Dance was selling the Strike King snag free floating frog. I bought one and took his advice and used the trailer hook that was included. The amount of bass caught on that lure rhymed with HERO!

Strike King Snag Free Floating Frog.....OVER RATED !

18 years later......I am killing them on a horny toad!

Fish them in weed choked ponds or over grass beds on lakes and rivers. It is FUN fishing!
