My work gives me generous gift card bonuses. Then I wrestle with how to spend it. Buying a few baits at a time doesn’t bother me. But I bought a 20.00 T shirt at academy the other day and it’s still bothering me, even though I really like the shirt. I think it’s the only clothes Ive bought in over a year, not counting my wolverine work boots. Oh, and not counting caps...

The wife doesn’t care if I buy fishing stuff as long as the bills are paid...

I havnt really bought too much fishing gear for awhile now. Mostly line, and plastic baits.                      If the bills are paid, my wife doesn't mind. As for clothes? I have one suit hanging in the closet, and I can't remember the last time I wore it.               Same attire every day. Work clothes most times. I buy what I need.

That is generally the understanding my wife and I have as well.

My wife gives me grief because I have a dedicated closet for all of my fishing clothes and it is filled to the brim yet I only wear the same 4 T-shirts that are old and ragged.  Don’t even get her started on hats..l.l??

If the UPS delivery guy knows your name

Not only does the Fed-Ex air-express delivery girl know me - we're friendly acquaintances and we always take time to chat about our goings on even when we just bump into each other around town. She fishes when she gets a chance and the wife teases me about her being my 'on the side girlfriend'.

Does fishing clothes(Bibs, Huk stuff, buffs, hats, etc) not count?

Those clothes should count. In my case if I’m out fishing Sunday morning in a L/S sun HUK shirt. Get back home wrap everything up. And carry on with the rest of my day. Keeping it on. Why would that not count. My HUK shirts are nicer than what I see a lot of people wear to church, grocery store or Home Depot.

I’m not overwhelmed with a lot of true fishing shirts. But the ones I do own some HUK, Columbia or Scales my wife most likely bought them. I’m perfectly fine with an old beat up Duluth LS tee. Not into dressing up to fish. But I do get that “you have not worn that HUK blah blah blah I got you yet”. Mostly wear them on vacation.

I've got three HUK and a Columbia - gifted to me by a member here. The HUKs are the Diawa specials that came with reels a few years back and he had plenty...so was offering them up.

The key to the marriage things is to ensure you include the spouse. My fiancé loves to be on the boat, so when I say its time to go fishing, she is always down to go!

I would not be able to live with someone different.

My wife never gives me a hard time about what I spend on fishing.  She told me for years before I bought my boat to get a new boat if it would make you happy.  I told her the last rod I bought was $500 and that I wanted to buy Panoptix and it would run roughly 3K.  She told me buy it but I am waiting.

My wife pushes me to buy fishing things all the time, but I think it is so she can spend without me griping about it.  I guess it's mutually beneficial, so I'm good with it!

All good. A lot of nice stuff out there. Manufacturer freebies are always nice. And they all are nice for the most part. My favorites are shirts from the people at ReelSnot. I’ve admitted this In numerous posts that I’m pretty anal. Anal to the point of bass fishing only fishing in white, light gray, light blue, med. blue or mixed combinations. Tans. I won’t be fishing in a bright red or orange, hot pink or any color like that. I don’t want fish to see that. Yep call me crazy. Wife thinks I’m sick. Maybe I am. And I am probably wrong in my thinking. I just don’t want to stand out against a sky background.  Been that way for so long that it would be tough to convince me differently even though I see pros every week on tv in their billboard fishing jerseys. This proves me wrong. But.

You are not wrong. I’ve sensed that over the years also.

I can wear jeans and casual shirts instead of suit and tie. The money I saved has gone to fund my fishing addiction.

Not to mention that casual is simply more comfortable than a suit and tie.

20 years of my career were spent in suit and tie - for scheduled meetings with 'bigwigs', I even had a 3-piece (trousers, vest, jacket) - still have it in fact, and it still fits.

This is exactly what my wife does also!  When I question her about how many purses she needs, she asks how many rods and reels I need.  That is usually the end of that conversation!?

My queen wears a short skirt and a long jacket.  We don't usually need each other's approval for purchases, but we like to talk to each other about it.  Sometimes it leads to making a different purchase altogether, usually something nicer than what either of us were planning.  Other times one of us reminded about some upcoming plans that might impact that purchase.  In any case, it's never a secret and never a conversation about permission.

This is how we do it also, just making sure there isn't something one or the other has forgotten that might get us in a pinch!

After 35 years of marriage, we have no idea what the other has purchased unless it's a " look what I bought ".

Even vehicles randomly show up in the driveway unbeknownst to the spouse.

Her vehicles have to be white so she traded in one white car for another white car and I never knew it til I got in it 3 days later.........I just smiled and said " nice ".

Everyone's relationship is unique in it's own way and wish all to be blessed with an outstanding spouse the way I have.

My wife doesn't really say anything about my tackle/ fishing purchases. She's into antique dishes, I know...who knew that there was such a thing. I don't say anything about that so it works out.

It was kind of funny last week however. I've mentioned on music threads before that Whiskey Myers is my favorite band. They're coming really close to here in September. One morning as she was going to work, she gave me her card number and asked me to order two tickets for us. A little later she called and asked if I had ordered the tickets? Being somewhat frugal when it comes to anything but fishing stuff, I said "No, I just can't pull the trigger." We hung up and she called back in around 10 minutes. She had bought really good seats that come with our own bartender, no way I could have done that although I'm thankful that she did! She mentioned that she thought it was funny that I didn't mind spending a ton of money on fishing, but that I found it hard purchasing concert tickets. Oh well, such is life.

Reason the wife didn't balk at my pan-fish haul this past week. She collects pins (got a display cabinet and everything) and Lego Minifigures (yep - another display cabinet)...so she really has no room to complain.

We do try to keep it down - we are on a fixed income.

My wife saw is not really the outdoorsy type. The other day she saw one of my rod/reel combos and told me this looks nice, picked it up and was flipping it around like she had a fish on. She was hitting stuff with it and I said, be careful with that. She said why, it’s only a fishing pole? I said, that’s a 500.00+ combo! She said, are you crazy! I thought she was going to hit me over the head with it!

Seriously, she’s okay with the fishing purchases as long as the bills get paid and other essentials are taken care of.
