Otter17 Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 What lb. test Flouro leader do you guys recommend for Largemouth? Or should I even concern myself with a leader? I have mainly used it in case the fish can see the braid. Thanks Quote
Super User ATA Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 It is so depending on where and when and what situation you fishing. Here in Castaic lake we do 6lb test long leader for them in one side of lake with spinning combo and I do 30lb test short leader in other side of lake. and thats one lake in the same day. so you need to give some details including the lure you trying to use. in general for every situation I suggest 12lb test. 2 1 Quote
Otter17 Posted April 29, 2021 Author Posted April 29, 2021 I will mostly be fishing a bunch of local ponds, and forest preserve lakes. The forest preserve lakes are very clear with submerged vegetation. The ponds are all good sized retention ponds and neighborhood lakes. Can be pretty weedy. With lower visibility in these ponds. I will be fishing Senkos, Creature baits, plastic worms, and keitech swim baits. Quote
Ski Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 Here in Fl, I use 17lb tied to 30lb braid on spinning gear. 1 Quote
paleus Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 12lb fluoro on baitcasters 8lb fluoro on spinning 1 Quote
TheBasslayer Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 Overall I've always used 10-12 pound flouro, and it works for me. I would use a leader if you are fishing water that is clear, and I would still use it if the water is muddy, but it isn't as important as using it in clear water. 1 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 Depends on the water. For fairly open conditions 12 is fine. If really weedy or wood-choked, I go heavier. There are many who use no leader at all, especially in water that is not that clear and open. I always use a leader because I don't want to be cutting my braid off very often. I use FC fly tippet material usually in 14-16 , mostly in open water for spinning. For BC I go 20. 2 1 Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 Here in the North, its debatable if you even need a leader for largemouth. They aren't the sight feeders that smallmouth are. That being said I usually do tie on a leader if I'm using braid as a mainline - 8 lb YZH for lighter/finesse applications and 12 lb YZH or 15 lb Abrazx for docks, jigs, flippin', etc. 1 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 https://seaguar.com/freshwater/new-lines/gold-label #6 for spinning tackle #12 or #15 for baitcasting 1 Quote
EWREX Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 i use 8-10lb leader on my spinning setups really depending on water clarity and cover. most of the lakes up my way are super clear water so the lighter the better 1 Quote
