Pikeman12 Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Hey guys, Getting tired of staying in because of rain. Going to invest in some rain gear, but I figured I would ask, what techniques do you guys like to use when fishing in the rain for bass? I've really only fished for catfish in the rain(they seem to love it near me) but never tried actually throwing lures consistently. What do you guys like to throw when fishing in the rain for bass? I figured maybe senkos because of all the bugs and stuff washing into the water, but if anyone has any other tips I am all ears! Thanks! Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted April 28, 2021 Super User Posted April 28, 2021 Frogs over grass if the grass has made it close to the top, my favorite way to fish! Here are a couple 6 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted April 28, 2021 Super User Posted April 28, 2021 Warm water and rain = buzzbait. Spinnerbait too. Shallow water low visibility. Get dem pigs. 2 Quote
Super User gim Posted April 28, 2021 Super User Posted April 28, 2021 I actually target rainy/cloudy days in the summer months. Hot, sunny bluebird days suck because the bite is often tougher and there’s a lot more recreational boats out. Rain also often means low pressure which is usually better than high pressure so the bite is usually better too. I almost exclusively use moving lures because fish are more aggressive. Often times, my best outings of the entire season are on a cloudy/rainy day. 3 Quote
Kenny Yi Posted April 28, 2021 Posted April 28, 2021 Flashy and loud: Spinnerbaits, Buzzbaits, Chatterbaits. I am no bass behavior expert, but i would guess the cloudy sky and the water's distorted surface from the rain help the bass feel comfortable, which would lead them to a feeding mode. 1 Quote

Yakalong Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 crank baits and chatter baits seem to work well in the rain (or any other time) 1 Quote
Fred Allen Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 Its funny because I was going to make this exact topic. Im on vacation so I have to fish or I will be mad I wasted vacation. Today I could not fish which makes me mad but tomorrow I can and it will be raining but its been very warm and will be again 60-70 degree. I got a walmart rain gear for 12 bucks and gonna go out on the kayak in the morning no matter what. I can use tips too. Quote
Super User WRB Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 Rain = lower light conditions good for predators like bass to hunt prey. Lures should be selected based on what the bass where you fish are eating. Crawdads, baitfish, worms etc. Basically everything works depending on the cover, depth and structure. I fish jigs when bass are targeting crawdads, jerk baits, crankbaits crawdad colors, spinnerbaits Shad color w/gold blades for baitfish and soft plastic worms. Tom 2 Quote

Super User jimmyjoe Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 Although I love fishing just before a storm or front, I rarely actually fish in the falling rain. The very few times that I have, the bite has been from 4 feet up to the surface. Most bites were on traps and squarebills. Retrieve speed was high. jj 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 Topwaters in rain. One of my best days ever in terms of numbers was a day with light rain, using a Baby Torpedo. If topwaters don't work, and I mean you tried all types to no avail, I'd move on to a spinnerbait. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted April 29, 2021 Global Moderator Posted April 29, 2021 I usually start with moving baits with good vibration, like bladed jigs or spinnerbaits. I've had some great jig bites in the rain though. 1 Quote
Biglittle8 Posted April 29, 2021 Posted April 29, 2021 Fishing in a light to medium rain has been very productive for me. Especially, in on and off rain. Like others have said, I start with spinner baits and chatterbaits. I have caught a few on jerkbaits when the water temperature is cooler. Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 When I was younger, fishing in rain was common and spinnerbaits were the preferred bait. With age, rain ranks slightly behind wind as I don't like all my equipment getting soaked. Prefer to fish right after rain. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted April 29, 2021 Super User Posted April 29, 2021 Top water. Especially the whopper plopper. Quote

Other baits work really well too, but spinnerbaits cover lots of water and wont snag up where a crankbait or bladed jig will. I've found that a more compact SBs get more bites without sacrificing quality of fish. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted April 30, 2021 Super User Posted April 30, 2021 Any lures may work but I usually try to get bites with buzzbait's and spinnerbait's first. Quote

Pikeman12 Posted April 30, 2021 Author Posted April 30, 2021 Thanks for the advice guys! I put it to use today. Was fishing senkos mostly with my medium light then the bite shut off when the rain came. Switched to a 1/4 oz mini rattle trap-gold, fished it aggressively and the bite turned back on again. I honestly laughed and said "hah, it works!" Appreciate the advice guys! 1 Quote
